How is an automobile harmful to our society?

emissions, oil waste, roads created that destroy land

for our environment?
1. emissions.
2. oil drililng and exploration (these wouldn't be happening without the automobile and are very polluting)
3. waste vehicles. tires, batteries and windshield wipers get thrown out in the woods (i see them all the time). old cars rust into the ground.
4. mining operations of various materials world wide that destroy the environment. many are for the manufacture of automobiles.
5. logging. many places int he jungle have been clear cut to make room for rubber trees (yes, rubber comes from trees), defacing the jungle and environment in the process.
6. road salt and chemicals. without the automobile and speed at which it travels the excessive chemicals poured onto roads and later leached into water supplies and the environment wouldn't happen. how bad is salt for the environment? well, in old times armies used to plow salt into the ground to make the ground infertile and completely destroy entire populations of people they didn't like or trust (see the razing of carthage by the romans)
7. urban sprawl. is only possible b/c of the automobile. we would live more closely and concentratedly without damaging the environment around us without the automobile.
for society?

contributes to the breakdowns of the family and community. when people only traveled by foot, horse or boat families lived across the street from each other. entire towns never left the area where they were born. people knew and understood those around them better as a result and pulled together better to handle tragedy than they do today.

Automobiles emit harmful toxins into the earth's atmosphere. It has been known to cause more damaging effects to the ozone layer causing the sun's rays to become more heated. Basically the carbon monoxide from the gas causes the effects of global warming to continue to grow worse. That is why many cars now a days are made more fuel efficient and made with less chemicals. The more mileage per gallon that a car can drive on, the less gas consumed, which means more fuel efficiency.

The automobile is most helpful to our environment by it's replacement of the horse (which also has exhaust fumes - and other solid and liquid waste, causing disease.)
