How long should you wait for a person crossing at a crosswalk before you can go?

Pedestrian has the right of way. I would say wait until they have reached the other side or at least have gotten past your lane before you continue on safely.

um...its best to wait until they get on the other side of the street...but at least wait until they have passed your car before you go!

i have been asking this question a lot trying to find out the true answer.
3 1/2 months ago i was hit by a car in the crosswalk on a green running man & suffered a tibial plateau fracture & have 5 months on crutches while my plate & 5 screws heal. i thank god that i did not walk one more step forward as he would have knocked me in front of his car & rolled over a part of me rather than throwing me to the curb!

so...i have been asking & this is what i have come up with so far.
in a crosswalk where there is a light, most people say that you must wait for the pedestrian to get half way across & are not on the side you are heading.
in a crosswalk with no light (the middle of a street) i was told you must wait until they are completely across.
i am now so sensitive to pedestrians...i search for them to cross & slow down near any crosswalk.

my friend was waiting for her nail shop to open & was parked at the curb...she watched a man in a hawaiian shirt cross back & forth while the cops gave tickets to many cars who did not stop...the second he stepped off the curb.

so...now i am on a 'crosswalk awareness campaign.'
i tell pedestrians not to walk unless they have eye contact with the car/driver.
i tell drivers to scan all crosswalks twice...just in case.

i now say "a moment in time can save a life...or a lifetime of pain." "let the crazies behind you honk the next time you stop to give the pedestrian the right of way that is theirs."

as bad as it is to recover from a traumatic injury, i think it would be worse to live with knowing you hit someone and caused them their pain or their life.
believe me, it happens way too often! i personally know two people that have lost family members due to careless drivers & i hear stories every day of the injuries that others have suffered.
so, drive safe & be aware!

Hi derf, I use to be a crossing guard for the public schools. And it's safe to go ahead once the person has made it half way across(on your side). Or until the crossing guard has signal it's OK. Other wise you can be ticketed for not obeying the guard. And it's not a nice kind of ticket. They get you for in dangering a public servant and the smallest ticket cost about 600.00 for not obeying that little old crossing guard.
