The distance must be at least the time you take to count from 1 to 4 Mississippily.
That will give you a safe distance at any speed.

At that speed, use the 2 second rule. When they pass a landmark, count "one thousand one, one thousand two." You should not pass the landmark before finished counting.

yep 1 car length for every 10 mph ... so its 2 and a half

Each state might vary, that's Ohio's rule.

Ya that two second rule is Okay most of the time. But it also takes an average of 5/8 of a second just for the reaction time before you can even figure your stopping distance which varys from weight of vehicle and road conditions. If you want to follow a guide line that has been proven. Just never close in your Gap any closer than # seconds from the vehicle in front. I'm a Test driver I have survied countless numbers of Bad drivers while in Test vehicles valued over a Million dollars. The last thing I do is Get to close to another vehicle for more reasons than just being able to stop soon enough it maintains a wide enough space so you can be more relaxed. A task I Have been able to do for Ten years is Drive Heavy trafic areas for hours every day of the week. With out having a complete melt down from the potential near death episodes.

1 car per 10 mph is the easiest rule to follow. the second count works too, but as another mentioned, you may be focusing too much on that.
