You asked, so here goes-
Motor vehicles of all types 33.4 million
Cars............................. 27.9 "
Motor cycles................. 1.1 "
Total fatalities on roads... 3000
Car fatalities.................. 1500
Motor cyclists fatalities.. 600
(All figures rounded up for simplicity)
Good luck with the test and do not be put off by the figures. I have been riding over 30 years. Just assume every other driver is an idiot, that everyone waiting at a junction is blind and always make sure you have an escape route when faced with a potential accident - so no riding in the gutter. |

I've also seen your question on bike size, which is relevant here.
Your odds of survival are affected by your road sense and your ability to handle the bike. A powerful bike is more difficult to handle than a less powerful bike - until you have acquired the necessary skills.
With that in mind I would advise against even a 600, unless you expect to have a short biking career and only go out for pointless Sunday rides. My advice would be to start with a "commuter" 400. This will get you used to riding in the rain, riding at night, riding on poor services, handling and parking, etc. It will be less powerful than a 600, but that is a good thing when you're learning how to use the throttle and brakes - and how not to use them.
When you've been riding for a while get yourself into the Institute of Advanced Motorists, IAM, and get a copy of the police riding manual "motorcycle roadcraft". It's not about riding slowly, but about making good progress for the conditions. Even if you want to ride in excess of the limit this stuff is really useful - it makes you safer. The IAM can liaise with police motorcyclists to train and test riding members. It's an eye opener and it could save your life and limbs.
A 600 will out perform many sports cars. You wouldn't get a Porsche straight after your test would you? Get a big bike when you're ready and able to manage it.
Good luck with the test and with your bikes. |
