Compared to the people who do not wear them, very few. You are far safer to wear one. The chances of dying because of wearing one are slim to none.
I have never pulled a person out of a car that was not wearing a seat belt that lived. Now that's scary.

Alright... after a long search the best I could come up with is 0.01% (1 in every 10,000) FATAL crashes where a person had worn a seatbelt, but was unable to get it off, and drowned or burned alive. The kicker to that statistic, however, is that not wearing a seatbelt would not have saved them; rather left the victim unconscious or dead on impact rather than surviving the crash and dying afterward.
Modern seatbelts are designed not to lock up, and easy to release post-crash. Just in case, any smart person would keep a small pocketknife in the armrest just in case you need to cut it loose. Remember, in any crash in which the seatlbelt would end up trapping you, not wearing one would leave you unconscious and helpless anyway. |

The unfortunate truth is that some people die because of seat belts. But the seat belt has dramatically reduced the number of deaths in car accidents. You can decide not to wear them but consider this fact. Not fiction, but fact.
If a person in the back seat is not wearing a seat belt and the car is in a forward accident(not hit from the side), the person in the front is 5 times more likely to die because they get smashed in the head by the person from the back seat being thrown at them.
So sit in the front of your car and don't wear a seat belt. But if you are in the front and you are in an accident you better make sure the person in the back is wearing one, or you may die. |

I have responded to more car accidents than I can count- either as an EMT or as a cop. Of all of the fatality accidents I have been on, NOT ONCE have I had to cut the seat belt off of a dead body. |

preventing fatalities.
That is, in crashes severe enough to be fatal for those not wearing a
