I usually rotate them every 5000 miles or if I drive a lot, highway, every 10k. The rule of thumb is every 5000 miles however. |

The purpose of rotating your tires is to cause them to wear evenly. If you do this correctly they will all need replacing at the same time. I personally don't rotate them often, if at all just because I can afford two tires easier than I can afford four.
I also have a front-end alignment done at least once every twelve thousand miles (more frequently if I do a lot of in-town driving). When I replace two tires, I put them on the back (rear-wheel drive in my case) and rotate the back ones to the front, then immediately have an alignment done.
If you wait until you see signs of uneven wear on the front tires before having an alignment done then it is too late and the alignment, while it will help, won't correct the damage done to the tires. |
