How much does a car seat cost?

I need to buy a car seat for a toy drive i'm participating in for a child who really needs one- how much do they usually cost and where can I find an affordable, nice one?

The child is 3 years old Btw.

Most important is do *not* buy a used car seat. It may not be an option with a toy drive... but it is important to keep in mind in any case. You should only use a used seat if you know it's history and have run it through the 'checklist' found on the website in my 'source' box below.

I would also avoid a seat with an 'overhead shield'... these have proven to be less safe but they sell so they are still on the market many places. Beyond that any new carseat you buy will be safe for the child *if used correctly*... so I would focus on trying to find one that is easy to use.

Myself... I can only afford the most basic seats, but I work very hard to use them properly. I tend to get mine at Walmart for $40-50... but of course you really need to decide just what age/size child you are shopping for before you get an exact brand/price recommendation.

I'd go here: http://www.cpsafety.com/default.aspx And check out their 'shopping guides'. They are fabulous for giving the 'basics' on shopping for a good affordable seat and giving info on some of the nice features that are available if you feel you can afford to go a 'step up'. :)

i would go with a cosco scenara atleast the walmarts up here there like 43 dollars and i think there good up to about 90-100 pds and they havent had any recalls on them since they have started making them which used to be a couple years ago so i would choose that one
