Chains slow you down. They are great for deep snow but next to useless on ice unless you use the claw type. But they restrict the speed that you can travel at because they can be thrown off at higher speeds. They way I look at it, if you need chains you should not be driving a car there in the first place. Big rigs maybe but not cars.

a lot but you will also have to reduce your speed<

I bought one of those flashlights you wear on your head. Very helpfull to keep your hands free to work. Yes wear water proof lined gloves. It makes a big difference to wear chains in snow and ice. But not slush and wet roads. The chains will break eventually on bare roads. Chains add better traction. keep your speed under 35 with chains on. Keep distance between you and other vehicles. Leave a good cushion.

They will make a big difference but you should carry a pair of gloves, a flashlight and an old mat with your chains.

Murphy’s law says it will be dark when you need to install your chains on the highway.

The gloves will help protect your hands from freezing to the metal and the mat will help keep your knees dry while you are installing the chains.
