How naughty is this ?

I was a passenger today in someones car we were in a 30 mph zone, she was driving 48 mph, I had to tell her to slow down,
It wasn't a friend, but someone I know professionally
On a scale of 1-10 how would you rate this,
Additional Details She's a court officer

48mph is excessive on ANY 30mph road, ignore the idiots telling you it depends on road conditions. I don't stick to speed limits, but being 18mph over is far too much.
I've done what you did. Frankly I couldn't care less about the driver or pedestrians, I just don't want some idiot injuring me the passenger! |

If it was in a residential area its quite naughty, I have kids and the amount of idiots i see hurtling down the road is scary |

Anyone doing 48 in a 30mph zone should be banned ! And before all you foot to the floor boards guys scream out, it could be your kid that wanders out into the road! |

You were correct to tell her (with tact, "Is it 50MPH"?) MPH along here)). Had she been stopped you may have been accused of aiding and abetting her and fined.
I rate you 10 (correct) |

Not quite sure what I'm rating!
If i'm rating her driving, it's a 0, tell her to get in touch with me to arrange some defensive driving lessons!
If i'm rating your decision to tell her to slow down, then it's a 10 - It's not just pedestrians and other people in danger when someone is speeding - it's the driver and passengers in the speeding car too.
A great tip to anyone who is a passenger in a car being driven too fast, or dangerously - if you don't want to sound like a "goody goody" say to the driver that you are going to be sick - put your hand over your mouth and start heaving - the drive should soon slow down and stop if he/she thinks you are gonna chunder all over his/her carpets and seats!!
Remember everyone, it's better to be a few minutes late, than "dead" on time :) |

If she had hit something or someone a very big deal as you were in the car and could of been injured by her stupidity. |

Report this to her superiors, she probably won't have any action taken against her, but she may get a well deserved boot up her backside. |

not very proffessional behavior.Does she run her business in a similar manner ,dangerously flouting the law? I once travelled to a meeting with the boss ,who drove at 100mph most of the way. Got the train home and demanded a refund of the fare from the company. The top boss took it out of the other mans bonus when he found out |

She scores at the worst end possible (especially if she's a court officer) - as a driver, you have to be aware that ANYTHING can suddenly come into the path of your vehicle at ANY time and at that speed, it's almost impossible to stop in time - elderly people with poor perception of speed, poor sight and/or poor hearing, a child, an animal or another vehicle are all major daily hazards.
The other day I was driving at the speed limit, when a cat suddenly ran out infront of my car - thank God, I wasn't speeding and I managed to stop in time, but even though I was concentrating and I managed to brake in time, if the cat hadn't have also stopped and shrank back from my car, I would have still hit and killed him - this is just an example, but I didn't see the cat until it was almost too late due to parked cars - that cat could have easily been a CHILD though!
A similar thing happened to me a few years ago when I was driving down a busy street in the rain and an old man just stepped out across my oncoming car from between two vehicles because he wrongly assumed he'd have enough time - if I'd have been speeding (which I guiltily admit, I used to until the thing with the old man), he'd have ended up over my car roof!
I know a lot of people aren't really bothered by roadkill, but I personally would feel terrible if I drove over and killed a human or an animal. |

I think this was somewhat excessive. This driver should have been more responsible. This was dangerous for her passenger(s), other road users and herself. |

More details please -time of day, weather and traffic conditions, maybe location. Is she generally a crap driver? (unaware of conditions, blabs on mobile 'phone etc).
3:30 pm outside school etc - a bit careless, she should pay more attention.
3:30 am on a dual carriageway, clear, dry night, no traffic, junctions, driver concentrating, etc - so what.
Try telling that to a scamera (speed camera ) though.
PS.Perhaps we should all worry more about general standards of diving than fixating on "speeding" alone
Cheers. |

Depends. Was it a 30 zone at school leaving time, or a 30 zone that was previously 50 that was completely clear with no obstructions and perfect visability?.
Frankly, IMHO speed limits are for the guidence of wise men, and the obedience of fools. You should drive at the speed that feels safe, or a little below that (sometimes higher than the limit, sometimes much lower).
The limits are a good guide to this (or at least they used to be before they reduced loads of them to generate cash from cameras).
48 in a 30 is meaningless without knowing the road, but look at the cars around - are they doing the same speed? If so then I suspect she knew what she was doing. If not, then she's a bit of a fool.
Edit: Remember, doing 30 when everyone else is doing 50 is more dangerous than doing 50! It's all to do with relative speed to the other vehicles. Also driving that slowly uses more fuel, so maybe she was trying to be green! :-) |
