In NY, you can take it once every 18 months to "remove" 4 violation points and one reportable accident. The other option for the insurance discount is once every 3 years.

Voluntary defensive driving course? As often as you want. I would suggest that if you develop good driving habits, defensive driving will come along for the ride.

In Canada you can take a commercial defencive driving course any time one is offered. I took one last spring at my own expense just before I offered to drive school bus in my community. Since then I have taken a different course sponsored by the school board and this wednesday I will be taking an additional course offered by the school board.

Later this year I will be attending a combination racing / defencive / skid school. This one was a gift from my kids for Xmas. All three of us are attending. They are both new drivers.
