Most if not all first time drives make bad choices. I know I did, seems natural. First at 16 or less you probably drove too careful and slow because you didn't know what you could handle. Then you test yourself, driving too fast and in wrong conditions. I was doing 90 on country roads that were on mountains for a bit. Then you learn you can handle anything and don't need to test it so become a better driver.
18 is about as young as I really good driver can be, the upper end is about 65 even if you can drive until 85 or more you start to lose things like hearing or have aches and pains or move a little slower, night vision is harder. Then we will start to adjust by not driving at night as much or avoiding freeways.
So we should give licenses at 16 but not allow them to drive commercial vehicles until they are 18.

The age is not so much a factor as the maturity level of the person, as this affects decision making abilities. Driving ages are set by guessing at when this maturity level is reached. By the way, just as there are many 16 yr olds who have no business driving, there are many much older who should never been granted a license either.

Besides maturity, the training drivers receive is also a major factor. Most apparently do not receive enough, or choose to ignore what they did get.

I agree with chris2EM, age has nothing to do with it. There are plenty of people old enough to drive that are driving that don't know how. You don't wake up on your 18th birthday knowing how to drive. Extensive driving and competence tests are what is necessary. If implemented today I'd bet 40% or more people would lose their licence, a handful of people age 14-18 would get licenses and accidents would drop by 80%. Driving would be much safer.
I started driving at 15 mainly California(freeways, trailering, 3 states), never pulled over untill after reaching 18 and getting a license, never an incident. Nothing to do with my age, competence, understanding the law and skill are the key. 16 yrs driving now and only infractions are 4 speeding tickets, all at different ages, showing again age had no bearing.

No, that won't work.

We let too many stupid people on the road.

We need to make it harder for people to get a license, it's just way too easy for people to get one.

It's not the age we need to be looking at, it's more than that.

16 is fine.

I beleive that about 18 would be better. Of course the younger kids will object. At 16 you are not old enough or responsible enough to drive. (There are always the exception).Kids seem more immmature these days. They have less responcibilities. Kids should be more into studing for their future instead of about a car. Best to ya!

Nowadays, the way younger and some people have been driving, aggressively and disrespectful to the rules of the road, IMO, i think 18 yrs old with 2 years probation. 16 is too young.

?
i would say 20-21 years old the teens are out to road hog or see what they can get by with.

i think it should be 17 as this gives time for you to pass your driving test before you hit 18 when most people start university. Many student need cars to go uni so i think this is vital. Although i think Eng are wanting to change the driving age to 18 soon :S hmm what do you think? ? ?

This is a good one! Up to 18 yrs?...Uh, yeah and they should be supervised, for a year. Because SOME teens act like "big shots" behind the wheel. And there should be a HEIGHT limit too! I was just hit by this guy in a truck and he could NOT see me!
The dummy had one of those handicapped tags on his mirror! Now I have a screwed up knee because of him!
