How reliable is four wheel drive in the snow when stopped on a hill?

How reliable is four wheel drive in the snow when stopped on a hill?

Last year, I was driving a two wheel drive SUV through Tahoe when I was on a hill. I stopped to let another car go past, and then my tires got stuck. This year, I was planning on purchasing a four wheel drive Chevrolet Colorado or Toyota Tacoma. I know to drive incredibly slowly in snow regardless of the car to be completely safe. But does 4WD help in situations such as icy slopes?

4x4 would have helped in your situation as long as the road wasn't nothing but a sheet of ice. Icy roads require a different approach than roads only covered in loose or packed snow and it doesn't matter if you had 4 wheel or 10 wheel drive when it comes to icy roads- you may have still been stuck. Regardless also whether you are in a 4x2 or 4x4 vehicle, you don't stop going uphill if you can avoid it. As long as you are moving at a steady speed, you will remain so unless something interferes with your traction and forward progress (like stopping).

4wd is extremely reliable on snow. The problem that you will get into is once the snow becomes packed down or if you are on ice. You will still be able to control your vehicle better then if it was a 2wd, but it is still real easy to loose control. That's a pretty big misconception about 4wd.....that you can drive like normal on ice. Not even close!!

So, you're good on snow, be careful on ice or packed snow.
