How safe is it to continue using tyres with a crazed / cracked surface?

Just the rear tyres on a small car. There's plenty of tread left.

Not safe. You have age deterioration on your rear tyres, Once they start crazing it is an irreversible process.
On a small car like yours they shouldn't cost too much.

Go for the best tyre that you can afford.
Try these guys. reasonable prices/ http://www.tyre-shopper.co.uk/home.asp?gclid=CJn51OrgrZMCFQ86EAodl2iMBQ

Your tyres are knackered, regardless of how much tread is left. Cracking and crazing are indications of excessive age and exposure and degradation of the rubber. It's time for new.

its not safe at all please change them, I'm a paramedic and i see what damage worn tyres can cause when they blow and believe me they will

barry_baz_barry

just as safe as driving them with nails.....really just depends on what your seeing but in most cases the more the cracks the worse the tire..... is cause by old age... heat and yep that new tire shine spray...... its best to replace.. and its best you have them check by a tire store for a better ideal of how bad they really are.... im guessing they are bad since you have notice them

Bernie
Replace it as soon as possible or it might cause you accidents while driving in the highway safety is the best issue here and it should be your first priority on your car don't forgot the brakes

You could get by for a bit a low speeds only. Absolutely, no highway or speeds above 45 kpm.

Better yet, have them removed. Cracked tyres indicate dry compounds, and are more subject to blow out.

Up to 6 Years:
Visual tire inspections and monthly air pressure checks are recommended.
• Tire Quality/Construction: Features and Benefits help to describe capabilities of tires during this period.
• Service Conditions/Maintenance: Rotate tires every 6-8,000 miles, check air pressure monthly and check tire balance every 12-16,000 miles. Tire Manufacturers suggest most tires are out of service at 3-4 years based on wear.
• Tire Wear/Condition: Less than new tread changes traction and stability capabilities in extreme weather conditions (such as: snow, ice, rain, dirt/mud).
• Environmental Conditions: Exposure to heat and ultraviolet rays may cause structural changes in the tire not found in more moderate climates.
• Tire DOT*: Tire age is not the major consideration during this portion of the tire's life.

6 to 10 Years:
Replacement is recommended.
• Tire Quality/Construction: Are more valid concerns as some tires are designed to be nearing the end of their service life based on average consumer travel of 12-15,000 miles annually.
• Service Conditions/Maintenance: Tires that have not been serviced or maintained properly are typically at the end of their service life.
• Tire Wear/Condition: Less tread reduces traction and stability in all weather conditions as well as propensity to punctures.
• Environmental Conditions: Exposure to heat and ultraviolet rays causes ozone/weather cracking and structural changes.
• Tire DOT*: Now, one of the important considerations as some vehicle manufacturers recommend replacement and tire manufacturer warranties expire.

More Than 10 Years:
No service on tires with a DOT beyond 10 years.
• Tire Quality/Construction, Service Conditions/ Maintenance, Tire Wear/Condition, Environmental Conditions: Regardless of all of these conditions, tires reach the end of their life.
• Tire DOT*: Tire age is the most important consideration during this portion of the tire life as tire manufacturers recommend replacement of any tires regardless of service, including spares.

Depends on the severity of the damage.
Minor weather cracking is acceptable. It's only the top layer of rubber that is affected and is considered a cosmetic damage.

I drove on these kinds of tires for years... until the tread worn considerably...

Especially on the rear, I think you are ok...
