How safe is it to drive with a hitch?
Find answers to your legal question.

How safe is it to drive with a hitch?

I have never drove with a hitch. I have a 2002 Ford Explorer Sport and I'll be traveling about 10 hours on the road (stopping of course) with a toddler in the back seat. Is driving with a hitch safe? Someone from a previous question of mine recommended it for my move (so that I could save money on shipping my mattresses) and I'm really considering it. But I want to be safe. In February (when I plan on moving) there may be snow on the roads here until I get closer to the state where I'm going. Thanks in advance.

I assume that you are wondering if you should tow a trailer behind your car. You need to find out what your car is rated for towing. There is a weight limit on how much any car or truck can tow. Once you have that information, then you need to see if that weight limit is above the weight of what you plan to tow. If its a trailer, then you must add the weight of the trailer with the weight of all the items you want to put in the trailer. You dont want to go up a hill pulling a trailer that is heavier than the car can pull. You dont want to go down the hill if your car cant safely stop you and the trailer.

You need to make sure you can connect the lighting system from your car to the trailer, so the brake lights on the trailer work when you apply the brakes on your car.

You may need larger side view mirrors to see around the trailer.

Driving with a trailer takes some practice. Accelerate slowly. Brake early. Take wide turns. Drive slowly, or not at all on windy days. Make sure your car is tuned up and all the fluids are at the proper level. Tires must be in good shape.

Pulling a trailer will require more attention than driving without a trailer. If you have a toddler in the car, you will want to take a lot of rests, if you have a long trip.

Backing up a trailer is a real difficult task that requires a lot of practice. Everything does the exact opposite of what you expect. Try to avoid having to back up with a trailer, if you havent done it before. (It took me a half hour to get my boat into the driveway.)

You might want to consider renting a van to move your stuff. A cargo van will be simpler to navigate. You will still need to drive cautiously though.

Good luck with your move.

Are you asking if it's safe to drive with a trailer on the back?

Driving with just a hitch on the back will be like driving without one. Except if you forget it's there while your walking around the truck and happen to catch your shin on it.

If your asking if it's safe to ride with a trailer on the back. That all depends on you.
You can not forget it's back there.
When making turns it will turn allot tighter then your truck will.
And you have to remember to leave yourself extra room for lane changes and parking spots.
Backing a trailer is also a challenge, and a skill.
You just have to be careful with it.

I would suggest that if your going to be pulling one for a move that you practice with it unloaded, and in a safe place, like an empty parking lot, first. That way you'll know how it handles, and what you need to look for, feel for, and do when you have it loaded and on the road.
If you know anyone who has pulled a trailer, and can give you some help while practicing that would be a really good plus.

Good Luck.

If your pulling something should not be a problem as long as your care full and remember it is back there. If you just have a hitch on your car with nothing on it you will never know it is there.
