This comes from an interview (survey) of many convicted rapists. They looked for women with pony tails (easy to grab and control), women who were busy- preoccupied with a cell phone or looking down for their car keys (basically not paying attention), Women who did not make eye contact with them (would not remember what they looked like to report to authorities later) They said that they were less likely to bother with a woman carrying an umbrella or anything that could be used as a weapon. If a woman put up a fight or yelled or screamed they were more likely to give up because they wanted what came easy to them. So with that info. I would carry some type of umbrella or walking stick, keep your cell phone handy, know where you are throughout the day in case you need to provide a location to the police should you become a victim, look at every man in the eye if they pass you or you are stuck on an elevator, or subway, alone with one, Don't wear your hair in a pony tail, and Do pay attention to your surroundings. If by travel you mean you are going somewhere by plane, you can't take pepper spray or a knife with you for protection. Maybe you could obtain one when you reach your destination. Be careful because you could also be charged with weapon possession if caught carrying a knife or pepper spray. I know it is illegal in the state I live in.
If a stranger asks you if you are traveling alone don't let on that you are. Tell him you are meeting your family or friends soon. Just basically be aware but not too paranoid or frightened to talk to people and enjoy yourself.
If you have the time before you travel take a self defense class for women. Women need to use their lower body (stronger than their upper body) for defending themselves. a swift kick you know where is a great way to intitially disable a man. Also stomping on the shin with your heel/shoe. The butt of your hand driving up his nose works wonders too. I like to take out the knee cap with a good hard kick. |

Take a self-defense course, and aska about kubatons. They are a small version of what police carry, and can be used in a variety of ways. There are also expandable batons, which can tuck neatly in your purse, be held in your hand like a long roll of quarters, and expand into a very effective impact weapon.

(g) taking a umbrella is good decision but u have to know how to defend yourself by that. (h) If u ever became victimed to rape go to police station or hospital .

Don't put money in one place. Hide some in bra, panty pockets pants shoes and the smaller denominations in the bag. Wear shoes that won't give problems in running. Or better cancel travel appointment and reschedule it when escort is available. |

my god!! i travel so much alone, have been for a very long time, and all over and by buses or general category trains etc...i have never had a situation...
i don't think we should be so paranoid, we should be sensible, and not do stupid things as find yourself alone in a new place dead at night...cut off people who are being a shade too friendly and who sends the creeps up your back...
i have also enjoyed the freedom of being able to travel at the drop of a hat, and have made amazing friends on the way...
life is too short, we should enjoy it and put our faith in people, rather than be afriad of them...i have never been let down by it... |
