How should children ride in cars with no car seats - (Traveling in the Caribe)?

What is the best position to ride in a car for children 5 and 3 years old, while traveling in the caribe.
In the caribe it is very difficult/impossible to find taxis/transportation with seat belts so a car seat from North America is useless. Second I hear that if they seat on your lap and there is a head-on collision you could be crushing them with your weight. Thus, the question. What is the safest way for children to ride in a car with no seat belts.

in the 70's when car seats and seat belt laws didn't exist, me and my brothers used to climb all over the car. we would crawl from one side of the back seat to the other, crawling across each other, as well as crawling from the back seat to the front seat and back to the back again. i learned how to lay flat up against the top of the front seat when i would crawl across it so i wouldn't be in the way of the rear-view mirror. my favorite was sitting in the floorwell in the back seat and putting my coloring book up on the hump to color.

same way we did it 40 yrs ago get in back seat and ride same way to stil do it now get in and go sure its dangerous but if there is no seat belt you have only two ways to deal with it ride without or walk really

Well...you won't like my answer, but here it is.

THEY DON'T

this would be a deal breaker for me, and should be a deal breaker for any parent. Is any vacation/trip worth your child's life? How will you fell if your child is killed/severely injured b/c you guys choose to go ahead and go despite the lack of safety? I would not do it, or I would call ahead and make sure I would have used of a vehicle with belts in it for the whole trip. And I'd bring their seats from home to use on the plane and while there.

Its not something you can be flexible on. Yes if your child rides in your lap, they could be killed even in a non-serious accident b/c the weight of your body will crush them. Even if they are sitting in their own spot in the car, if no one in the car is wearing seatbelts, that makes each and every passenger a flying object in an accident. You'd still crush your child, or they'd go through the windshield. Its not any safer to drive there than it is here - in fact, its probably less so.

There's more. You can search and find them. this isn't just a parental decision, or an inconvenience to find a way out of, this is life and death and it is a very big deal. Don't do it. Its not worth it. Go to disneyland instead!
