How to keep them safe? Car Seat Safety?

I have two autistic sons, ages 3 and 4. They are both in brand new Britax Regent carseats. Earlier this week, my 4 yr old unbuckled himself completely from the 5-pt harness after we got home. Today, my 3 yr old unbuckled himself from his 5-pt harness while I was driving.

I need some advice on what I can do to keep them safe. They have limited understanding of what we say. They have no concept of danger.

You have got one of the toughest issues in car seats. Some things that people will suggest *aren't* that safe... because they interfere with how the straps fit which can make the seat less safe.

I have heard a few tips that may help though:

Cut a small piece of Velcro (the hard 'sharp' plastic half) for use on the button that you push to open the straps. It can still be used... but it is less 'fun' for the little one to push. This is my favorite idea.. but I don't know if yours would mind the velcro or not.

Put a coat on backwards over the child and the buckled straps. Works as 'blanket' in cold weather and restricts access to the straps a *bit*... but with bigger ones it is just one more tiny thing to take off. Maybe a bit more of an 'early warning system' for you though... since you could see that the coats were off.

Possibly tougher with autistic kids... but as soon as the hands go for the buckles... pull over the car. Drill, drill, drill that we do not move if you are not buckled. Whether they understand danger or not... they *might* understand "I want the icecream we were going to get and I can't have it if I don't leave the buckles alone"... don't you think? It will make long trips out of short ones for awhile... but if it gets through to them... problem solved.

If I think of other good things I've heard I'll come back and add them. I'm just lucky none of mine has ever done this... because it is a fight I wouldn't wish on anyone! Good luck!
