Find answers to your legal question.

I'm driving on the freeway and I'm nervous help!?

I'm taking my brother to my grandmother's this Friday. This isn't the first time I've drove on the freeway to her house, but it is the first time I've driven there with no other driver along in my truck. Despite the fact I know the way, I'm still nervous.

Anyway have any suggestions or experiences?
Additional Details
About 80 miles.

See I live in Long Beach CA and Grandma lives in Phelan CA.

I was nervous when I drove on the interstate for the first time. I drove 30 miles on the interstate 3 days a week to my college campus and I got used to the drive. After I got used to it, it didn't bother me anymore. I got used to the semi trucks and traffic.

I actually love to speed on the interstate, but never got a ticket. My average speed was around 80 mph (the speed limit is 70 and cops usually allow 10 over), but sometimes I have a heavy foot and go 85 or 90 (this is when there was light traffic). I got comfortable driving those speeds with no big deal. Actually the very first time, I drove about 85. I was very nervous that I wanted to get it over with and get there ASAP. When I drive on the interstate, I always like to pass everybody.

One time, I was behind a car while passing a semi and this car was taking a long time to pass. I got very nervous because I was on the side of this semi and this slow car ahead won't move faster than 70. I started beeping the horn and he eventually passed and got in the right lane. I like to pass semis quickly because that's safer (semis have large blind spots). If you have to go a little over the speed limit to get by someone, then that's what you do. After that experience, I avoided being behind a car that's going to pass slow.

For suggestions, stay in the right lane except to pass (when you're done passing, move back in the right lane). If there's more than 2 lanes, you can drive in the middle lane if you are going with traffic and there's not cars passing you on both sides. If traffic is moving too fast for you, then I suggest staying in the far right lane.

Before changing lanes to pass, always check your blind spot if you're not sure and check your mirrors often to be aware of what's going on behind you. Keep a safe following distance from the traffic ahead of you (5-6 seconds of distance).

After a first few minutes of interstate, you'll get used to it. May I ask how many miles is it to your grandmother's?

Do NOT drive too slow. Drive with the traffic. Change lanes ahead of time and do NOT slow down while changing lanes (you need to get into a lane not slower than the other cars there.)
And think about this: freeway is SAFER than streets because there is no cross traffic.

It is always nerve wrecking for most to drive on the freeways/interstates, especially people that don't often commute like that as as an everyday thing. And not to mention, all the cars and trucks zooming by as if it's some kind of a race. And then you have to worry about all your exit and entrance ramps where vehicles travels at different speed getting off or coming on.

Here is what I do when traveling on the interstates or freeways. I don't like to follow too closely behind, side of, or slightly ahead of semi-trucks or any big vehicles that tends to block my frontal and side views. If I'm ahead, I make sure I'm way ahead and if behind, I make sure I'm way behind...They're just that much more intimidating and dangerous to be close to anyway.

When approaching exit and entrance ramps, I like to move to the far left lane just to be on the safe side. And for drivers that are slower then everyone else, I just pass them. For you typical speeders who likes to zoom in and out of lanes, I try to stay far behind them just in case they do something crazy and cause a big pile up. And if there is a HOV (high occupancy vehicle) lane available, as you mentioned that you are taking your brother, I would suggest you use such lane at your convenience. I always do if and whenever I can.

Before you leave, be sure to re-adjust all your side and rear view mirrors accordingly and wipe them clean for better visibility. Check all tires for the correct tire pressures and you should be on your way. Have a fun and safe trip....Really, driving is mostly common sense stuff and being aware of your surroundings is the single most important thing......I always like to anticipate what I would do if this or that was to occur and somehow feels much better knowing the answers.
