I know scooters are fairly slow--most under 40 miles per hour. Is that safe for a child as a passenger?

Well, I guess I take this first... Scooters now, are designed to go over 60 mph in many cases. I think its up to you how fast you go. If you want to take your daughter down the street to a store on 35 mph roads, it would be your choice and I think if could be safe. They do make 2 passenger scooters. Its pricey, but Honda makes some and I'm sure other companys do as well.

That model, for instance, is a two seater, with dual disc brakes.
Just be safe. I'm sure you would wear a helmet and stuff, if shes done okay this far, you had to do something not so bad :)
I don't know why people think scooters are so unsafe, in most cases, it is the rider that makes them unsafe.

Another two seater...

And still another...
They are made like that for a reason, so you know, two people can ride on them. For nearby driving, I don't think there would be anything wrong with getting a scooter for you and your daughter provided you are safe about it... But I might think you are a little weird if you took her down a highway or something. |

I love motorcycles and own them now and have owned them all my life, but they can be dangerous for anyone, and you have to be vigilant for other drivers (they don't seem to pay attention to motorcyclists).
If you choose to take your daughter, make sure she has the appropriate safety gear: helmet (full face), jacket, and boots that cover the ankle, and gloves. |

I dont think its legal for a child under a certain age to ride those.
But either way, You should definetly purchase some protective gear like a helmet & such. |

In NC, it is illegal for anyone under 12 to ride as a passenger.
Don't do it... It's bad enough I risk my life. I will not risk my kids' lives. Take them around the neighborhood. |

Depends on your level of experience riding motorized two wheel cycles, and where you intend to ride.
No experience? FORGET IT! |

check user manual and use common sense
if you think it's dangerous, it just might be
check load restrictions and driver familiarity with added weight or braking abilities, tire conditions, seat length
then ask yourself do you feel comfortable if hit with consequences of putting a child on scooter?
up to you, free country (for now) |

I had been riding different 2 wheeled bikes for over 40yrs.
My kids and I all ways enjoy it and I took them for rides as early as 3 years old with no problems.
I can tell you that I have had accidents (nothing to serious) but never with my kids.
A scooter is a great machine and you will enjoy but, don't let yourself think that it is any safer than any other 2 wheeled motor bike.
My few little accidents(scrapes. cuts and bruises) that I have had over 40 years have been under 15 miles per hour.
You are most likely to be the most vulnerable to accidents while going slow (turning, parking etc).
With a scooter make sure you don't try to run with faster traffic.
Drive defensive, cars and trucks will NOT respect your presence on the road.
Take extra care with the kids and enjoy! |

As far as I know, all scooters are meant to only be used by one person. |
