Find answers to your legal question.

I'm moving cross country, planning to rent a u-haul trailer to pull behind my truck.?

What I'm reading online is reccomended speed 45mph, max 55mph.....am I really going to have to cross the country that slowly? Or is it ok to haul them (a 5x8 trailer) at normal speed limit (70 mph)

Bucky,
Keep your speed down to 65 if you can, as the drag on the 5x8's is hard on the gas consumption, and the 5 mph difference between 65 and 70 is about 20% in gas consumption.

Regards,
Dan

Just drive like you always do, just try to stay out of the passing lane.

If it is legal, I would go 70 on straighter roads and when it starts to get bendy (not a word =/ ), I would probably start to drive as if I needed Drew Carey type glasses.

you can go the highway speed limit, whatever it may be. they just put those stickers on there to avoid getting sued. also i might mention that if you have a ford explorer of firestone tires the last time i checked uhaul will not rent to you purely because they dont like either of those. whether they be mixed or not, youd better be prepared to lie

i work for this company, make sure who ever hooks up the trailer kows what he/ she is doing, and all the weight is all the way in the front of the trailer, also that the trailer is not to low on the grownd, because it can dammage your hitch, and every time you do stop, you must check the coppler, make sure it is very tight all the time, you lights must be running all the time, and if they are not for any reason you can always stop at any uhaul they will fix it for you..last thing if you go really fast you are risking an accident be careful.. good luck

Everyone has done a pretty good job of answering already. I would add that any U-haul I've ever seen has been about ready to fall apart. If you plan on moving along that quick make sure you've inspected the trailer you're going to rent very thoroughly.

If the tires on the trailer are small, like 14D, they have to go in a full rotation much faster than the tires on your truck. So if you're going about 60 mph, the tires on the trailer are spinning at a rate that would equal about 70 - 75 mph if your truck tires were spinning that fast. If the tires are 15 D then don't go any faster than about 65 mph. if they are 14D, I'd go no faster than 60. If they are 13D , I'd rent a different trailer.
What could happen is the bearings in the hub will overheat and....well.....they'll blow. Which will destroy the spindle on the axle, ruin the races in the hub, if not the whole hub its self, or cause the tire to break away from the axle and you'll lose your entire wheel.
Of course, you may get lucky. I've seen it all, and I have fixed it all. Because I build and service trailers everyday. For a 5x8: axle 120$ + bearing kit 15$ + hub 30$ = 165$ Plus cost of grease and other shop supplies and labor would be about 150$ So you'd be looking at a bill of about 350$ AT LEAST. So if you damage it, be sure and bring it to me... and I'll fix it for ya.

you really shouldn't, it just makes for a better chance for an accident. But like the other people said everybody else does. But will your insurance pay if they prove you were exceeding the speed limit/ If you have an accident? Is you or who ever you are traveling withs life really Worth th 20 mile an hour difference?

UCANTCME
Most all states require vehicles towing trailers to follow the posted truck speed limit which in alot of cases is 65 mph.....
