I almost got myself in a car accident.?

I was pulling out of Burger King and turning towards the direction of a 7 corner intersection (Yes! 7 corners!). Anyways, the line was back up pretty far, so I just pulled out and stood in the turning lane (I had to turn anyways). As I did, and the light was green. However, I don't know how this escaped my mind, but I didnt have the green arrow, so I kept going. As I start to turn, I noticed this car is about to hit me coming from the opposite way and I swirve and almost hit this car waiting at the light, and swirve back into place avoiding him. Im pretty sure there was only inches to spare. I was scared shitless and didnt realize my mistake until after my heart stopped beating so fast. I was extremely upset at myself that I did this and wish I could of said that Im truely sorry. I looked back to make sure there were no car accidents that I may have caused.

Has anyone else known they had almost been at fault of a car accident and felt like an a$$ afterwards? I wish there was a horn thing in the car that meant your truely sorry. I just can't stop thinking about how these people who I almost had gotten into an accident with and those who witnessed it how this dumbass almost caused a car accident.

As a teenager, I almost swiped a motorcycle in the left lane lane near an intersection. I was in the right and there was a right turn lane to my right with a big rig making a turn. It made me nervous, so I went into the left lane. I didn't see the motorcycle and he had to slam on his brakes. I didn't mean it, but he must have thought I did, because he chased me down and asked if I thought it was funny. I didn't know what else to do, so I just gave him a thumbs up. I was an inexperienced driver. He was an ***. I'm glad there was no accident.

First of all -- did you thank God for protecting you and the other drivers from a bad accident? You were blessed -- that could have been one serious multiple-vehicle accident!

I have not been in your situation, so I cannot tell you for sure how dumb I would feel -- especially when thinking about the possibilities of serious injury and even death, to someone who did nothing wrong while driving their car. I imagine I would be as shaken as you, or even more -- feel sick, or have a heart attack!

One thing is for sure, you got a rude awakening on how all it takes is one little distraction and -- bam -- lives can be altered in the twinkling of an eye! Cars are great for moving about, but they are also powerful weapons, if not handled carefully. I think that after this experience you are very aware of that fact and will be a more vigilant driver while sitting behind the wheel. Yes, it would be nice to have a "honk if you're sorry" option in the car but nothing can replace vigilance and careful driving.

One thing in your post struck me, though. At first you sound very contrite about your mistake, but towards the end it sounds like you may be sorry about almost causing an accident, but you may be even more concerned about what people will think or say about you. That should be the least of your worries! Just think of what worse things they would have been saying about you if the accident had happened and, God forbid, people had been seriously hurt or killed -- if you survived the accident I am sure you will be called worse at the trial for vehicular manslaughter, or worse.

So forget about what they are saying about you and instead concentrate on eliminating distractions in your car and keeping your mind on the road and the signs -- and thank God for His loving mercy! :-)

Yeah I've almost been in accidents I was going to cause, but never managed to cause one. Just glad other drivers are paying attention as well so they were able to help avoid them. I was more scared by the person who was going to wreck to me. I was on a one way street, two lanes and someone was going the wrong way, lucky for me no one was in the other lane so I able to swerve out of the way and go around them but that really freaked me out. Actually freaked me out more then when I was going to hit someone else, I mean I wasn't doing anything wrong and could have been hit head on. At least when I was going to hit someone by accident it would have been my fault and mostly just not paying quite enough attention.

Good for you.
Not that you almost caused an accident, but that you realized your mistake, made the necessary corrections during the mistake to avoid an accident, and learned from it.

And yes, I have been in situations where I was at fault and nearly caused an accident, and felt like crap about it. But usually, there isn't any way to go back and say "My fault, I'm sorry". You just have to let them curse you and make hand jestures, and go on.

I'm sure you won't make that mistake again, at least for a while.

You had a green light, so unless it is marked that you need a special turning light you should have the right of way.

But defensive driving means to check before proceeding. there may be a light malfunction with two wrong green lights or another driver who blew a red light or went through on a old yellow light.

Just wave your sorry and learn from it. I get more agreevated when the other driver almost causes an accident and flips me the bird.
