I am so stupid...made first big driving error?

I just obtained my permit 16 days ago after completeing my 30 hour driving classes. So far, I've only been driving around my small town and practicing at stop signs and lights to get a feel for driving. Earlier today, I was heading northbound and switched into the turning lane to make a left at the lights. The lights were red...so of course I stopped. Then they turned green and made my left. I forgot I was in the turning lane and had to wait for the green *arrow. It was too late to stop since I was already in the middle of the intersection, so I had to gun it. Not to mention about 1 second away from being hit by oncoming traffic. Thank God there were no cops around.
The whole situation was soo scary for me since it was my first huge mistake...someone could have been killed! I was too upset to even drive my family home.
I can't stop thinking about this and could use some consolation or advice from other experienced drivers.

It's ok (at least no one was injured). I remember when I first started driving on my own and running into all kinds of small mistakes I'd made. I don't think there's a driver alive who hasn't made a small hiccup before. You're new to driving, and regardless of what people may say, it's not as easy and "common sense" as we all think. We never know what may happen.
Driving gets easier as you get more expirience. You have probably learned greatly from that mistake, so take it as a lesson.
Don't be too hard on yourself..you're only human.

We all make mistakes. That's because we are human. We make errors in judgement because something is new to us, because we get distracted, or because some extreme emotion is involved.
Fortunately you were able to complete your left turn without incident, and therefore it's a lesson learned. You already know what happened and next time you'll look for your turning arrow.
Don't dwell on your errors. Learn from them. That is how you gain experience after all.
Just get out and drive on a regular basis and do remember that anything can happen at any time.

to many kids think that since they have their permit or just got their license that they are good drivers. you become a good driver after being exposed to years of different situations on the road. you lucked out this time because the other drivers were more aware. if you learn from it your o.k.

Obviously, you shouldn't have done that :) I guess, being a new driver, the green light is like a reflex.

The most important thing is to try not to get yourself or anyone else killed. Maybe, before you drive next, review the rules. Think of a whole bunch of driving scenarios and think about how you're going to handle them next time.

As a new driver, it's hard to deal with fear and reflexes. Unfortunately, it happens to virtually everyone. It wouldn't be such a big deal if it weren't dangerous! :)

So, don't beat yourself up. Just do what you can to correct it and to prevent it from happening again.

No harm, No foul... first off most places allow you to yield on a green in the left turning lane even if they have an arrow for you to do your turn safely. Check the intersection again to see if there's a sign that says yield on green. If so, then as long as the traffic is clear you can proceed with your left turn in that intersection. Otherwise if there's no sign to indicate that then you must wait for the arrow to make your turn. I'd still look to make sure that no one else is running through the intersection before turning even with the arrow as some ppl do run through intersections. You have to look out for the other drivers as well as yourself. Safety 101! Good luck and glad you're ok! take care and stay allert!

Hey at least you didn't hit anyone. I know a guy who did sort of the opposite... saw a green left-turn arrow, instinctively thought it was the green light, stepped on the gas and rear ended someone.

The other day I was trying to avoid some serious traffic by taking some back roads. Along this maybe 5 kilometer stretch there were at least 10 stop signs. I kept going, stopping, going, stopping. Nobody was around, but I adhered to every freakin stop sign. But... then there was a red light. Having just done 10 stop signs I wasn't really in the right frame of mind... stopped, looked all ways, and then went right on through the red like it was a stop sign. Haha. No one was around, nobody hurt, and I feel really dumb.

But you know what? You're a better driver now... Things happen for a reason. Next time you'll catch yourself before making the same mistake, and that next time, it might be the one that would have otherwise led to an accident!

You reacted too the visual stimulus of the green light. Many people do this. The light only gives you permission to go not the right! When you are stopped at a red light watch the other drivers when the light turns green. Many don't even look to see if any cars are coming! They just assume that the traffic will stop and pull out!!.You need to be constantly scanning while driving, Intersections are the worst
If you get that funny feeling in your stomach right before you make a driving decision that is your intuition telling you something is wrong, listen to it.

Don't let it get to you. We've all done something like that when we were new (and not so new) to driving. I've been driving for decades and not so long ago drove the wrong way up a one way street!! All I could see was a wall of cars heading towards me at full speed! Luckily, I was able to pull into a driveway to escape.

You actually handled your situation well. Most new drivers would have panicked and frozen - instead, you gunned it and got out of trouble, so well done! And driving through a red arrow is one mistake you'll never make again.

When you fall off a horse, you have to get right back on again. Same goes for driving. Put it behind you and get back behind the wheel - and take care.

The best thing is that no one was hurt. Don't be too hard on yourself, after all you are still leaning. Just learn from your mistake and you will be fine. I hope this helps.

Driving is actually very difficult. You have to concentrate on everything all of the time. When you are a new driver, this is particularly difficult because nothing comes automatically or naturally. You will get there.

My advice is to go easy on yourself, as people make mistakes. However, especially as a new driver, you have to give your entire focus to your driving. Don't drive while you're talking to friends, eating, or even listening to the radio. In time, you will improve. In the meantime, focus, focus, focus.

Best of luck to you. I used to be you. Some day you will be me. (lol...you know what i mean.)

The fact that you avoided the accident should be telling yourself how good of a driver you are.
