I can't drive with one foot!?
Find answers to your legal question.

I can't drive with one foot!?

I've been driving for about 6 months now & I learned driving with 2 feet. Nobody told me different. Now I'm taking drivers ed & my teacher told me i had to drive one footed bc it was better, safer, etc. Well Ive been practicing & Ive almost wrecked idk how many times in the past couple days trying to drive one footed. When i hit the brake my foot slips in between the accelerator & brake & when i pull out switching from the brake to the accelerator it slows me down & i about get hit. & when I'm backing up I forget if im pressing the gas or brake.. yet again causing me to hit something. So I dont see whats so bad about driving with two feet? I dont even touch the brake my foot hovers over it. But i would like to try to learn to drive with one foot but I know Im about to get into a wreck doing this. Any help please!?

Yeah i passed my drivers test driving with 2 feet. My instructor said I did perfect so...
It's just that my foot slips off the brake causing me to almost run into everything using 1 foot

I was taught to drive by Detroit Police officers, my dad and his partner -- the way they were taught to drive their police cruisers. I was taught to drive an automatic with both feet, one for the gas and one for the brake. That style of driving is *why* brake pedals are wider in automatic transmission equipped cars. That style of driving is safer as it cuts a fraction of a second off your reaction time.

maybe you are not cut out to be a driver, maybe you should turn in your driver's licence before someone gets hurt. there is no shame here, i am sure you could be good at other things

There is no law anywhere that requires one to drive with the right foot only. The safety gurus recommend driving with one foot but they don't write the laws. Go with what is most comfortable for you.

I am pretty sure that when you take you road test with the DMV that they can fail you for driving with two feet, I could be wrong. Who ever taught you that is bad bad bad person. JK. However, I used to have the same problem but what worked for me was to keep my left foot at a 90 degree angle parallel the seat and while i was parked to teach myself to only use the right foot. It worked for me. Sometimes i actually sat on my left foot so I could break the habit. Now if i try to use my left foot i nearly give myself whiplash.

Also I don't know, but i am assuming your driving an automatic, but typically if your driving a standard or stick shift, that's when you use your left foot.

If your forgetting what peddle your on get more practice hun, cause that's not great either.

What you might want to try is driving in a parking lot where you have lots of room, so you can get comfortable. Remember your new at this and nobody expects you to be perfect. take your time, remember to BREATH! Oh and way back when my driver ed teach always said look at the "big" picture and pay attention to whats around you. You will get better, and good luck. Hope that helps.

Oh and don't worry about getting slowed down...when you get better you will be waiting for new drivers just like the rest of us have to wait for you. they will get over it.

It's a safety issue if you think about it. Suppose you are going to hit something and your right foot is on the gas and you try to use your left foot to brake. Now suppose you really hit the object even if you brake with the left foot. The forward momentum forces your right foot down on the gas and causes your car to go forward. This is not good. It's very hard to get both feet lifted from each pedal when you are crashing and your air-bag is deployed.. It only takes a split second for all these factors to come into play. I would do as the instructor advised and get into the habit of using one foot. have a good day.

The misconception that driving with both feet is unsafe is still making it's rounds.

In driver's ed I was taught to drive with only one foot, but once I went through an advanced emergency vehicle driver's training course, I was taught there to use both feet (the correct & safest way to use both feet) and have always driven that way since. And I have never had an accident because of driving with both feet or forgot to lift my foot off the accelerator prior to having to slam on the brakes in an emergency.

If done correctly, using both feet is no more unsafe than driving with one foot. Your reaction times are significantly increased & you may be able to avoid a dangerous situation better.

When you are in a training environment, you've got to play be their rules. But when you are driving on your own, you can drive how you are comfortable- as long as your driving techniques are legal & you can still safely control the vehicle.

I use both feet also.
When there is no clutch, and no headlight dimmer switch (it used to be in the floorboard - ask somebody old), there isn't anything else for your left foot to do.
Tell your teacher to take a flying leap.

drive the way you are most comfortable. do you have a license or just
a permit? while taking instructions, drive the way they want you to. Take your time and consentrate.
