Find answers to your legal question.

I committed a hit and run and i don't have a driver's lisence now what?

I got really lazy and decided i'd get to school faster if i took my dad's car (he and my mom weren't home at the time) so i grabbed the keys and off i went. BAD IDEA! As i was making a right turn another car hit me. I drove for about 2 min before i stopped by the side of a house to wait for the young lady who hit me well she didn't show up (i later found out she had parked somewhere else so that's why i didn't see her) My side mirror broke off but nothing from her car was severely damaged. So when she didn't come i decided to just go to school and worry about it later. I thought she fled the scene but the police officer later told me she had parked somewhere behind me and i guess i just didn't see her. So now this counts as a hit and run for me (although i wasn't the one who hit her) and i was driving without a license and i had not asked for my dad's permission to borrow his car. So what happpens now? Is it true i won't be able to get my driver's license until i am 21? I'm currently 18. Will my dad's insurance cover the damages? I am just so stressed out about what happened... but oh well. I will just have to look at the bright side. At least no one was hurt right? I'll learn from this mistake that's for sure!

Now I am a little confused did she call the police? If she didn't you are okay. If she did then here is everything that you can be charged with. First Failure to stop At the Scene of an Accident (not as bad as a hit and run but can carry a hell of a fine). Second, Driving with out a license (you might be able to get out of this one but if you don't then you are looking at fines between 300 and 800 dollars plus you may not be able to get your licence until you are 21 depending on that state and since you are not a minor this may not be the case) Third, you may be fined for the accident even if it wasn't your falt (you were driving without a license and technically, depending on the state, without insurance a lot of states have a no pay no play laws meaning if you have no dl or insurance you are not supposed to be on the road thus it is your fault.) IF charged with everything you could be looking at a fine of about 1500 dollars al together. Oh and another thing if they do charge you with a hit and a run a lot of states have an auto suspencion of your license for 5 year meaning you would be 23 before you can get your dl. Oh and also if you were on private property then you will not have to worry about not having a dl. Private property does include a business parking lot. Because it is not state roads and thus no state road laws apply. And about the insurance it really depends on your parents coverage full coverage would probably take care of it but liability will not. And also if your parents decide to tell the police that you drove their car without their permission then you can be charged with joy riding wich will get you on probation but in some states they do not have a joy riding excemption and i could be Grand Theft Auto wich is a felony and you would do time for it.

Dude what the heck. You just answered your own question. And pretty well at that. Youre doing my job.

Tommy the cat
most hit and run drivers don't have a licence
-that's why they run........ and eventually get caught.
If she got your plate details she will report it and the cops will turn up, the rest is what the book says

Your Dads insurance might cover it but most people have a 500-1000 dollar deductible that they have to meet first especially if it is a newer car and if he puts a claim in it will most likely raise his insurance as well Thank God no one was hurt forgive yourself for making the mistake. Pay for your Dad's damage to the car it is your responsibility if he pays out of pocket for it to be fixed make sure you pay him back. It is part of being held accountable for your actions. You may have to wait until you are 21 to get your license but check it out to be sure. I'm glad you learned from this. Don't beat yourself up for this we all have made mistakes. Regardless of this mistake you sound like you have got a good head on your shoulders. A lot of kids would not have felt remorse. Since you are 18 don't make the mistake of drinking and partying because that will cause you a whole host of other problems and when you do get your license don't drink and drive. Good luck to you

Excellent job, you made a mistake and you'' realized '' that it was wrong for you to take you your dad's car, esp. without his permission and without a driving license. Your dad's insurance may increase and in some cases maybe canceled, but, don't get stressed, the damage has already been done.Friend, put it down as an experience, and never let it happen again.

I don't know about the laws where you are but I do know a bit about insurance.

Your father's insurance will not pay out. Basically you had no licence so even if he says he leant you the car, then you were not fit to drive it and therefore the insurance will not pay out. The only way they will is if your dad says the car was stolen which he will be reluctant to do.

As for the story of parking and looking for her, I don't think the police will believe that for one minute. Even if it is true it is lame and implies you are desperate to get away.

As for getting your licence, I think that that will depend on the courts. You are not a minor, you have been driving a car which is not yours with no insurance and you drove away from an accident. I would be amazed if you only got a 3 year ban from driving!

the best solution it's talk to your parents, there know what to do, and for the record you are going to get punished

1. As for your licence, 21 sounds about right.

2. As for your dads insurance paying for this, I don't think so.

3. Don't forget out the fine for this.
