I got a speeding ticket today! So now I'm wondering...?

...how much will it be? I was clocked going 51 in a 35 mph zone- which, actually, I had been going faster prior to the officer stopping me. He told me he was unable to issue warnings on that particular street which I think sounds like a crock of BS, besides which I heard that they always have the authority to issue a warning and officers who say otherwise probably have a quota of tickets to fill! So I'm wondering if I have anything to go on as far as fighting the ticket in court- I know if I go to court and he isn't there, the case has to be dismissed.
And...if not...anyone have any idea how much that ticket will be??? I live in Ohio.
Additional Details
No, I was NOT in a residential area. Those are TWENTY-FIVE, not THIRTY-FIVE. I was on a 4-lane street located in a commercial area, keeping up with the flow of traffic. I happened to be the unlucky one that was stopped.

The cost of the citation can very. It depends on how many tickets you've had in the last twelve months and how fast you were going. Court costs also very between jurisdictions. Though usually, court costs are between 55 and 70 dollars and the fine is a formula set by the court. Usually $2-4 for every 1 MPH over the limit.

If this is your first offense in 12 months then you are looking at approx. $87 to $138. Second offense adds double $'s to the formula and third offenses and above are a mandatory court appearance and an even bigger fine.

And as far as the quota is concerned, it is illegal in the state of Ohio, for a law enforcement agency of any kind, to have any type of a quota. They may, however, have stipulations regarding what and officer is allowed to give a warning for. Although by law, it is strictly officer discretion on who gets a ticket and who doesn't.

I do not know how much it will be. If you go in and plead guilt they normally lower the fine though. As far as the quota statement, most police departments do not have quotas for the officers. It is only the major cities that do. It should say on the ticket how much to pay also.

i got a ticket for going 81 in a 55. $242 ticket. i showed up to court, plead guilty, and they dropped it by $60. i dont believe the cop was correct with his reading. i was speeding, but i was going 75. he clocked me as he was going up a large hill, i was going down it. i looked it up online and radar guns are not acurate going up hills.

Since you have admitted that you WERE speeding, why are you trying to find a way to get out of it?

Ohio is a beast for tickets. I live in Michigan, so I have experience with the rabid dogs you guys call police officers, lol. Fines are different by each city, so you'll have to get specific information. Usually the fine will be listed on the back of the ticket. Otherwise you might be able to go to the website listed on the ticket and look it up, if there is no website, then call the court listed on the ticket. Most likely you ticket won't be in the system... it can take up to 3 weeks, but they will be able to tell you what the fine is without knowing your ticket number.

I will say this to everyone, it pays to go to court! Even if you get a crappy judge who tells you no, you can always appeal and the prosecutor might give you a deal. I got clocked at 17 over on a residential, prosecutor had me pay the fine and get only one point on my license instead of three. I did have to go to traffic school, but it was 2 hours a week for 2 weeks, which is well worth the money saved in car insurance!

Better yet, the cop might not even show up to back up the ticket. I've had that happen to me twice. In that case, the ticket is dismissed completely! Always go to court, because the fine cannot go up higher, but it can certainly go down.

One exception: If the cop wrote the ticket for a lower amount than what he has you clocked at, then it probably isn't a good idea to go to court because they can make you pay the full fine i.e. the fine for the speed they actually clocked you at.

Good luck! I know it can be daunting, but I've had 2 speeding tickets and 4 other tickets and I've beat the system for the most part (I have a Civic with a lot of aftermarket stuff, so it draws attention). Don't let it get you down!

Oh yeah, I've never paid court fees, so I'm not sure what everyone is talking about. Everyone has a chance to dispute a charge that is made against them by an officer, for free. That's the law. Court costs may apply to appeals tho, but they never did in my case.

well you can not really fight it because it is realy up to the officer to give a ticket or not and the ticket will be 100 easy the court cost is what hurts its like 80.00 and the ticket is usualy like 50.00 hope this helps...

Contact the court and give them the violation code, and they can tell you the price.

Many times officers are instructed to heavily enforce traffic laws in a certain area due to a high number of accidents, fatalities, etc. If he issues a warning, het gets in trouble.

And, hate to tell yout his, but officers don't need quotas. Any officer could write tickets all day long in most cities - they enforce the tickets that need to be enforced.

As for fighting it, you will lose - you were doing 16 over, which isn't even close to the speed limit. What argument are you going to make to the judge?

Just pay the fine to take driving school if that is an option.

The speeder that killed my fiancee and sent her mother to rehab for 2 years was only going 11 mph over the speed limit. So with you going close to 20mph over the limit I would say you are definately getting off easy. Sorry to be harsh but my life has been ripped apart by one careless speeder. Try driving the speed limit and thinking about other people that are on the road. You will only know the damage that you can do until AFTER it happens.

Like one other poster mentioned you admited to speeding so just pay the price.

isn't 35 mph for residential areas? don't you care that you might run over a child. just swallow your pride, pay the ticket, and obey the law.

You might try pleading guilty and claim some type of hardship and you might just get community service if it is your first offense of this type otherwise you are f**ked.

the ticket that i got for going 40 at a 25 was about $114 so urs will be a bit higher but not too much i'm sure, ok, what u need to do is take as long as possible when u fight the ticket, wait till the last day that they give you and go in and tell the person at the counter that u want to fight the ticket, u'll have to pay the ticket but u'll get back later if u fight it and win. ok the person at the desk will give you a date and then u show up that day, and like u said if they dont show up then u will not have to pay, if they show up ask for the details, they write so many tickets especially if they were trying to meet a quota, now if they still remember u and can tell the details then u have a big chance of loosing and u dont get the money back. but even if u lose you can go to traffic school and it wont go to ur insurance, and if u get another one, then u go to traffic school, they are gonna tell you that u can't but thats bull because they say that because they dont want anyone to know because they get screwed because the insurance companies get screwed if the ticket doesn't go to them. ok so if u get another one, you go to the judge and tell him exactly this: "i'm sorry your honor, i really messed up again in these last 18 months, but i feel i did not get the best of my traffic school, may i please go to complete my traffic school?" the judge will say something like "are you sure that you want to do that? it will be a waste of time because it will still be informed to the insurance company, now are you sure you want to repeat/continue traffic school even though you wont get any credit for it" dont worry about what the judge says its just so others dont do it, they dont want people to do it, remember that, so simply reply "i understand your honor, and i still want to take the class again" the judge will say ok and put you to teh side and make a big deal about to discourage others from doing that, but dont worry your gonna get out of having to pay higher for ur insurance in the end, just suffer a little embarissment and u'll be better off

Get one thing straight, you have nothing to fight. You were speeding. If you try to fight that ticket, the officer will show up on a later court date and trust me, it's bad.

Just plead guilty, and hope for the best. Try to take drivers school to clear the point off your record.

The ticket will prolly end up being a few hundred.
