I got a ticket for "failure to yield", but i yielded.?

Okay, here's the skinny. Last night, at 2:20am, i was driving my girlfriend home when i got pulled over. The officer said that I failed to yield when turning onto a major route and that i cut across 3 lanes, while speeding. First off, was not speeding. My girlfriend was telling me to go faster than the speed limit cuz she was late. I did not cut across three lanes, i was in the right lane, which merged into the middle lane, then i put my directional on to go into the left lane. Now, most importantly, I slowed down, and looked to see if anyone was coming, and i was all clear. When handing me the ticket, the officer said "I'm going to write you up for failure to yield, because you gotta stop"...tell me if that makes any sense to you! If i had to stop, wouldn't it be a stop sign, and not a yield sign?

I'm thinking i should plead not guilty, does that sound like good enough reasons to fight this ticket?
Additional Details
just to clarify, i was not speeding, she was telling me too, but i said, no its late and i'm sure a cop would pull me over. so i wasn't speeding. she can vouch.

Go back to the intersection where you got on the main drag and take a photo of the sign there. If it says STOP, then you should've done so. If it says YIELD, it means that through (cross) traffic has right-of-way and you should be prepared to stop. You could be tagged for forcing cross traffic to slow or stop. Get the photo and take it to court with you. At 2:20a, I don't think there was too much traffic to contend with.

All the best.

You can only get a failure to yield if there was another car coming... usually that kind of ticket is only given in an accident. You probably have a good chance if you fight it in court.

I think that if you feel you are getting a ticket falsely, you should contest it in court. Now here is what is true about the traffic laws. When you approach a yield sign you are supposed to slow down. You are only required to come to a stop if you see on coming traffic. If not then you are to slow down and then proceed. Now again, if you feel the officer gave you a ticket without cause then contest it. You should explain your side of the story and if the judge finds that you are not guilty you will evade the charges. But if not, then just pay the fine and move on. Sometimes police officers can be wrong about traffic laws. We are all human, and even they make mistakes. There are even some police officers that lie about the offense, just to get money. Whatever the reason is, I believe you should go to court to contest it.

Yes .............you should talk with the judge and explain this to him or her, don't just give in if you are right.
