Sure, get a dog.

Also get better locks, some knives, and pepper spray.

Someone with a gun can shoot the dog as easily as they could shoot you.

german shepherd. or dutch shepherd..malimars are good. i have lived with all three of those dogs-all cop dogs. they are loving and protective. but make sure they have areas to run/walk outside.

I think maybe you should look into getting an alarm system for your house, or if you visit a place where they sell alarms you can get an alarm agency sticker (Brinks for example). You stick the stick on your front and back door, even windows if you like, it makes the robber or bad guy think your house has an alarm system and they won't even bother entering, you can also purchase a "fake" security camera for outside your door, OR another good one is outside your door place a huge stainless steel dog food bowl and have a mean sounding dog name engraved into it, another one I would suggest is putting some "beware of dog" signs in your frount and back windows, you can also purchase a dog barking alarm system, a robber hears that and they run the other way! If you want to purchase a dog please dog get one just to be a guard dog, dogs are so much more than that. Try your local animal shelter, there are many nice dogs in need of a loving home. Best of luck!

A big dog, such as an American Bulldog is a decent scare tactic but you shouldn't solely depend on that. I suggest taking some defense classes and/or getting an alarm system.

Pedigree dogs have lots of medical problems which can be very expensive, try a none pedigree. They also live longer and normally can eat a cheaper diet. Often a dogs barking is enough to keep unwanted people away, there are lots of houses without dogs so it does not have to be very big.

Wow! How scary for you! I can relate, somewhat. I was attacked at Wal-Mart for no reason and it took months to really shake that feeling. I imagine it will take longer for you as you thought you were safe and sound at home.

As for the dog. We have a dog, actually two of 'em, and it certainly makes me feel better when my hubby is gone. I sleep better and everyone on the street is afraid of them even though we have never given anyone any reason to fear them. That is just the power of suggestion!

Just remember to put up beware of dog signs so that no one can claim they didn't know about him. Also, definitely get training. German shepherds are smart dogs and need constant mental and physical stimulation.

Have fun with your new doggie! Also, the bonus is you are rescuing a dog from the pound.

Remember, though, that nothing is foolproof. Not a dog or an alarm system. I put my faith in Jesus. He is my protector and will not fail me. Yes, I like that my dogs are deterrents to anyone, but God is my strength and goes before me in all things. So even if you don't get a dog or alarm system. You can ask Jesus into your life and have that peace that comes only from Him.

yes dogs are great for protection but u gota get a tough dog...

Friendly Stranger..
Well, I think that is a good idea. Many people own watch dogs because they feel that if an intruder approaches their living space the watch dog will be of some effect. The purpose of a watch dog is not only to stand guard in the case of such an attack or intrusion, but to also alert the owner of any impending danger. Think of it as a car alarm. When someone approaches that is unknown the dog will sound off letting you know that something may be wrong. I think it has its advantages and watch dogs have saved lives. Just make sure that you know what the costs are and also keep in mind that serves the purpose of alerting you of a problem. There is a difference between an attack dog and a dog that just alerts you to the situation. It is a good idea, because the bark of the dog will likely discouarge any robberies. I think you should go for it.

A dog should not be used as a weapon. You should get a dog if you want a companion and you are willing to love it and take care of it properly. You should take some self defence classes, get a better security system and lock your doors and windows. Then if you still want a pet... German Shepard's are great dogs who will protect you if the rest of your security features fail. You don't want to but the dog in harms way though, you should fight you own battles, not your dog.

Did you call the police?

But if you're serious about a watch dog, try a St. Bernard. Very friendly towards owners, and also very protective of them. Cute and big, too.

1.What is the probability that you are going to get robbed again ?
2. If you do get robbed , the criminal will probably get less money than you would spend on feeding and taking care of the dog.
3. Dog sh!t does not smell good and you would have to take it out for a walk during the cold winter unless you live in tropic climate.

If that is what you want then go for it but remember that you are completely responsible for what that dog can do to other people...so increase your insurance coverage......
