probibly not. where did you get it? If it has ever been in a crash then defenatly not. Call the manufacturer and ask them if it still meets the safety standards, the car seat manufacturers have come a long way in safety since 1997.

depends what kind of shape it's in and what it's rated for. the regulations on car seats have changed in the last few years. call your local police station and ask for a car seat check. SOME places will even replace the carseat with a new one if it doesn't meet regulations

have it checked out by your public safety office or division of youth services ... i know a young girl whos baby was ejected and killed because of a used carseat ... if your in a financial crunch these offices should be able to help you find a safe careseat for free or for loan...

I wouold just buy a new one b/c the extreme heat inside of cars can cause the plastic components of the seat to break down.

No, you need to buy a new one. The recommended life span of car seats is 6 years. As someone else said, it is mainly due to the extreme temperature changes in cars throughout the year and seasons that can cause the plastic to weaken. Most seats now have an expiration date stamped on the back. Also remember that your baby can NOT be front facing until he/she is 20 pounds AND 1 year old. You will want to get a convertible seat (can be used both rear and front facing). If you need help installing it contact your police department and they will either have a certified car seat tech on staff or can direct you to someone who is certified.
