I have a 2003 ford focus and it slides really bad during the winter even with sandbags...does anyone know why?

When I'm doing like 5-10mph and i touch my brakes lightly it starts to slide really bad. It's a front wheel drive car and i dont think it should be sliding so much does anyone know why it slides so much or more things that i can do to prevent it from sliding...it has 2 sandbags in it already i think they're 90 pounds each....

I put sandbags in the back for more weight because it's the back that slides while i'm driving the front only slides a little when i start going from a stop but that's ok

Take out the sandbags, buy four winter tires. Your problem is with the tires you have on the car right now, I have driven all kinds of front wheel drive cars with winter tires thought the worst blizzards an ice storms without too much trouble. Even on a front wheel drive the better (stickier) tires need to be on the back of the vehicle, otherwise your vehicle will be very unstable which is what you describe. - I wonder if this is what you have.

If you don't already have a set of winter tires then you will need to buy a set of four....

It's a small, light car that doesn't grip the road very well. Winter tires might help some, but you'll have to accept that it's dicey in slick conditions and adjust.

All season tires may do it. Why have sandbags in the rear when its front wheel drive.?
