I have anti-lock brakes, why do i still slide in the snow?
Find answers to your legal question.

I have anti-lock brakes, why do i still slide in the snow?

When it snows and I hit the brakes it makes a grinding noise and I feel the pedal moving under my feet so I know my ABS is working but I still slide really far. Why does this happen?
Additional Details
Even when I'm going REALLY slow it still does this, why? I can be pulling up to my house doing 5 mph and it will do it.

Driving too fast and braking too late. The point of ABS is to allow you to brake & steer at the same time not stop you quicker! SLOW DOWN, PLAN AHEAD!

.

You are not sliding you are rolling. Read the post above mine. He is a Class 1 police driver....one of, if not THE most highly trained police drivers in the world....

I live at the bottom of a mountain, so I know exactly what you are talking about. It has nothing at all to do with driving too fast for conditions. I can be moving 1mph and have the same thing happening.

If you hear a moaning and groaning noise coming from under the hood and your brake pedal is pulsing up and down, your ABS is doing it's job. If you actually hear a "grinding" noise, it's not the ABS, it's more like a worn out brake pad eating into a rotor.

In any case, ABS senses when a wheel has either locked up or is about to lock up. When that happens, the ABS releases that wheel from locking up. On real slippery roads, the ABS can only do so much. The wheels lock up and as soon as ABS releases that one, another one is locking up. ABS is not perfect, but it is way better than not having it.

Even ABS cannot defeat the laws of physics. ABS works best when you are driving according to the road and weather conditions. Having ABS, TRACTION CONTROL and a VEHICLE STABILITY SYSTEM does not give one carte blanche to exceed the road conditions when driving. And, for that matter, neither does 4WD or ALL WHEEL DRIVE.

That's what it's suppose to do. ABS braks is to prevent you brakes from locking up which seems to be doing the job on your car but if there isn't sufficient traction, it will still slide...

Because you are on a very slick surface. All the various safety features and high tech gadgets do not eliminate drivers from using common sense.

Yeah like the other said abs has nothing to do with how fast you stop your car. It only prevent the brake pads from sticking to your rotor from excessive hydraulic pressure when you push down really hard on your brakes. It pulses the pressure to your brake system. And just remember friction is what stops your car not your brakes. Hope this helps.

You slide because you are driving too fast for conditions. Simple as that. ABS helps to prevent your tires from locking up by pumping your brakes for you. It doesnt make the road less slippery.

Yeah, there isnt any traction to completely stop the tires without locking up or skidding...if you seem to have this problem anymore, just throw the transmission into Reverse and gas it! that should slow the skidding down
