I have just bought an automatic car in the current conditions I have it in D but whats best in the snow & ice?

Some one has told me that it should have 1&2 on the gears but mine has M S P
I'm confused

I don't think you have an automatic gearbox, you have a clutchless manual gearbox.
The positions you have are
Manual
Sequential
Park
The sequential position should allow you to start off in 2nd gear, which may give better traction in the snow.

Could do with knowing the exact car for a more accurate answer, but snow driving should be in your handbook.

Your best bet is leave it in the first possition next to neutral. A lot of cars have a start in second position so you can go better in snow, but it's hard on em to constantly go back and forth, not to mention you're going to be constantly messing with it. Your best bet is go to tire rack and get snow and ice tires, they have a new firestone that does real well and they are farely inexpensive if you consider this http://www.tirerack.com/winter/wintertesting.jsp and how much of a pain is is to be stuck, or worse.
