I hit a car today...what going to happen?

i was driving on the highway, everyone was driving about 55 - 65 in the left lane. The guy in front of me suddenly braked really hard which forced me to brake really hard and caused the front of my car to hit the car in front me. There were no visible marks on the car in front of me. i also inspected the front of my car and its ok. Now, when i saw the nearest stop, i pulled into a parking lot to talk it over with the person that i hit but i saw that he only took down my license plate and drove off. What goings to happen from here?! Im so nervous. this is my first incident of hitting a car. Thanks.

well... this could be a scam, because, im some states the law says if you hit the back of a car, its your fault, or it could be that he just wanted your liscence incase any lasting injuries occur

You're supposed to give him your insurance information, but since he didn't ask for it you don't have to sweat it. If there was more than $100.00 damage to his car, he could try to track you down by your license plate number and file a claim with your insurance company for the damage. I doubt he will though -- if he was really concerned about the damage he would have asked you for your insurance information.

BEST CASE SCENARIO: Nothing happens, he goes his way, you go yours, no harm, no foul.

WORST CASE SCENARIO: He files a claim against your insurance company for the damage, they pay it once they find out you were at fault, your insurance rates may go up.

P.S.: There is a chance that he could go to the police and claim it was a hit-and-run. If the police come looking for you and ask you about this, tell them the truth and point out the obvious flaw in his claim -- you rear-ended this guy, so how did he get your license plate number if you took off?

1. Call the police and get a report for your protection.

2. Call your insurance company as well.

3. It will be your fault.

You should have exchanged insurance information, but since he was only interested in your license plate number he must not be thinking about a claim - at least right now. If there is absolutely no damage to any vehicle you should be ok. The other driver could come back and file a police report and make a claim so write down what you remember about the accident and take pictures of your vehicle as it is after the accident and keep them for three years.

Depends on what state you're in as to how he may seek recovery from you. If its a minor impact, it is likely that your insurance company will deny any injury claim. Regardless, it is likely that your insurance rate will raise slightly. Feel free to email me with your state info and possibly what insurance company you have and I can provide a more professional, educated opinion.

All in all, the important thing is that you're not hurt. I wouldn't worry about the rest. Assuming you have insurance, you will make no out of pocket payments.

Did you take his registration number and his name and add + drivers license details? Ok don't panic- Contact your insurance company ASAP ICBC- Also I think you should make a police report and have it on record- As long as there was no injury to any person, the insurance companies will sort it out but get it on record

You were driving too close and caused an accident. Nothing is ok. If you would have stayed and called the police and gotten his license it would be easier.... you should report the truth immediately and avoid another charge of fleeing an accident. How did you get your license and why would you drive so close to someone in the left lane? I hope you learn a lesson without too much punishment. Thankfully there were no injuries but, then again, maybe there were and you are in for a load of problems!

probably turn it into his insurance company....i'm just curious to know how you managed to not cause any damage when going 55 or 65???!! Also, if you were tailgating that would be why he hit the brakes, a s shole drivers like me do this!!! If someone is following too closely they hit the brakes causing you to hit them which then would be considered your fault because you "rear-ended" them. Anyway, chances are he just did that to scare you so you stay off his a s s!

You set yourself up for a fall. There is a chance that the minor accident you had will be blown off by the other driver as it should be if there are no injuries or damage. However, should you have hit a "bad" person they could be filing a report as I type, should you ever get into an accident call your insurance company or the police and report it no matter how small the damage is.

Minor accidents like that the police will usually just take a report of the vehicles involved and note if there are any injuries or damages. The guy you hit could file his own report with your license number and tell them anything he wants. Chances are he/she won't but I wouldn't want to take that chance.

Call the police (non emergency) number listing in your phone book and tell them what happened. That way there is a report on it, you more than likely won't get a ticket or anything, but it will cover your backside should anything happen. Remember state facts only - Time and location - what happened after, just like you stated above.

Good Luck!

You should have traded insurance information anyway, because the bumper may not show the impact until later [falling off] but the license plate isn't going to do anything for him. I wouldn't worry about it unless your car shows signs of damage later.

Ever heard of a safe following distance??

He really slammed his brakes on.. That is why you use a safe follwing distance that is why you stay off someones back side far enough that if he has an emergency stop you don't run into him...

It's in your driving manual that you read to get your license..

If you would have smashed into his car you'd have been toast..You should be worried enough to learn how to drive safely..
The rearender is the guilty one..No matter how you try to paint it ..

If someone would have been injured you would be guilty of a crime..

To all those report it to your insurance answers..
Why should someone screw their self when the guy isn't going to and drive up your rates.. Negs coming for that one but I ain't the stupid one..I don't go out of my way to mess up my life ..I also don't tail gate and blame the other guy if I run into him.

Since he left, I'd be 99% certain you won't ever see him again..

Go on about your day.. Drive safely and live a long life

Did you call the police? It doesn't sound like you did. If you're ever in an accident, no matter how minor, ALWAYS call the police to get an accident report.

Nothing will happen to you. You may have an insurance hassle if you don't have a police report.

Nontheless, you should have your car checked out. You could have some damage (ie, bent frame, etc).

Technically, both of you left the scene of an accident, which is a no-no. But don't worry. The guy took down your license plate number, so what? He left the scene, so he has no legal leg to stand on if he wants to report it or take any other kind of action.

Love Jack
