No you should not hit parked cars

yes, but just to make sure, leave your name and telephone number and tell them what happened. just stick it under the windshield wiper. but besides that, you did what any decent person would have done!

You are very lucky he came out. If you had left you could have been charged later for leaving the scene of an accident.

i think many people are guilty of hitting a parked car and leaving, luckily there was no damage. If you ever get in that situation again and the owner of the vehicle isn't there, leave a piece of paper under the windshield wipers with your name and number. Explain you hit the car and you're truely sorry. You see no damage but call if there is a problem! Think about it this way, wouldn't you want to know if someone hit your car?

You still should've left a note on the car somewhere even if there was no damage. I still would've found the owner of the car somehow or left a note with my phone number and name.

If you strike another vehicle and cause any damage, you are required by law to identify yourself to the other vehicle's owner or operator. If the owner cannot be located, you should leave a note on the vehicle with your details AND take down the tag number of the vehicle and make a police report.

It's not always possible to assess whether any actual damage was done merely by looking at it. For example, most vehicle bumpers are covered with plastic that will spring back into place when hit even though the underlying structure actually IS damaged, sometimes expensively so.

So, waiting a bit to see if anyone came out was the right thing to do, but starting to leave without leaving a note or taking down the details of the other vehicle was NOT the right thing to do. Good start, poor finish.

FYI, you should have gotten the owner's details. Just because a "friend" says it was OK doesn't make it so and doesn't absolve you of the ultimate responsibility for the damages.

No reason to hang around if there's no damage. You only have a legal duty to act if there is injury or damage. There is no civil or criminal wrong in just hitting someone's car without damage or injury. Of course you pissed him off but so what?

Heather
you should have put a note just i case!!! yes

Les
My car has plenty of damage from being hit while parked! None of it readily apparent so nobody left a note nor took any responsibility for their actions and left me with nothing.

Turns out there is a lot of plastic in the manufacture of today's cars and when a car gets bumped in the parking lot, that plastic flexes, snaps off all the little plastic clips that hold it together and then goes back to almost it's original look when the car that hit it moves away.

By the time I get home, my marker lights and any other thing held in with clips is hanging from my bumper and I'm left madder than ever!

So, whenever you hit somebody, take responsibility for your actions and do what you are supposed to do as directed by the department of motor vehicles! Leave your contact information on a note... a phone number, anything but running away and pretending nothing happened at all. Chances are nothing did happen but in case it did, your insurance will pay for the damages anyway.

You should have taken pictures of the vehicle and left a note with your information.

Damn, thats one long run on sentence, is there even a comma or period?

If you hit a parked car and nothing happened to the other car, its your fault. So there is nothing you can do but blame yourself!

Think Dodger Blue
well I guess you could have waited longer, but then again I don't know what I would do in that situation

i had my parked car hit one time. i was @ a park. the person wrote a note and left it on the windshield. they were willing to either pay to get it fixed or turn it into their insurance company. they were very nice and honest people. i knew of someone who hit a parked car and left a note. but their note said sorry! and that was it. :) accidents happen. don't feel bad. you did the right thing. i mean, how long should you hang around waiting for someone to come running out?

I probably would have left a note, stating I had bumped the car, didn't see any damage so left. I would also be sure a witness could verify this, like go into the store with windows where they could see what happened. Apparantly, the guy saw something, otherwise he wouldn't have come out screaming. That guy just might take your license number down, do some "real damage" to his car, then come a'callin saying you did damage and he is suing. Hopefully, he is "normal" and won't do something stupid, or fraudulant. Good luck, good karma. You have good karma, it'll be okay.

That just happened to me last week, but fortunately the person who hit my car left their name and number. If they didn't I would have had to pay a $500 deductible to get me car fixed. I believe you do to others what you want done to you. If the roles were reversed would you have wanted someone to leave you a note?

You did good..."all's well that ends well", right? Shake it off...

Curious_Yank_in_South_Korea
No damage to the other car in a private parking lot, not on a street, therefore you did the right thing to wait. If you decide to claim your damage, it will only hurt your insurance, therefore, take your lesson learned and move on.

yeah, you could have left a note on the windshield, but since there was no damage.. his insurance will take care of anything anyway

BundyGil
Yes, you did, but so did the man. He wasn't to know until he checked that his friend's car was ok.

1. Were you panicky when you wrote this Q.? It's a bit unclear.

2. From what I can tell, I think you did fine, especially when the guy's friend said the hit car was all right. If there had been some sort of damage, of whatever degree, then I would've stayed. But fortunately, in your case, things turned out okay...except for your car.

komical
You should probably keep the fact that you hit a parked car a secret. As far as stupid things go that has to be one of the worst.

Munya Says: DUH!
I wouldve taken out my cell phone camera and taken a picture of the "no damage" part on the car that you hit.

Better safe than end up on Judge Judy.

The last time someone backed into me in a parking lot, I got out of my car and b!tch smacked her upside her head. Her daughter got out and said "Stop screaming at my mom" and I said "You--get back in the minivan, you're too fat to speak to me". I know, the "too fat" part was mean, but hey, she backed RIGHT into me...the hog head!
True story.

sure, "f" that dude
