I just bought a 2008 mazda 3, it doesnt have anti-lock brakes, how big of a deal is that? Is it very unsafe?

People drove for almost one hundred years and still do drive without ABS. However, they are extremely important. When you stomp on brakes without ABS they lock up disabling you from being able to maneuver your car. Here is a scenario. My car doesn't have anti lock brakes, a deer ran in front of me, I stomped on the brakes and since I couldn't steer my car so I went straight off the cliff (not a huge one, but enough to cause a lot of damage). My next car will have anti lock brakes. BTW, the Mazda3 is a fine car.

For those who keep saying "it does have ABS" ABS is only an option on i trim levels.

How is that? Mine is 2005 3 i and it came with ABS. Anyway it's not a big deal, you just don't have the stutter when you stop fast. Insurance gives you a credit if you have ABS.

I do not like the first answer. My husband has owned 4 Mazda's throughout his life (61). Bought a 2005 Mazda 3LE 2.3 for his daughter and convinced me to get one. Velocity Red Mica. Best darn car I've ever had and never a problem, still have same mfg tires.

The car is safe. However braking on certain road surface conditions may be more difficult. When braking wheel lockup should always be avoided. This can be done by intermittently applying and releasing the brakes during a stop on a slippery surface. This skill is developed by experience, so be careful. When you hear the wheels sliding, release the pressure on the pedal for just enough time for the wheel to begin rotating again, then re-apply. Repeat until the car is stopped. Remember that when your front wheels are sliding, you do not have steering control either.

If you don't drive on snow, icy roads or torrential rainstorms then you will probably never engage your anti-lock brakes anyway. They only activate under panic stops above 15 mph and despite popular belief they do NOT shorten length of stops at all.

Most cars on the road dont have anti-lock breaking system and it doesn't make too much of a difference if you know how to use the brakes. There isn't any problem with not having it, just pump the breaks if your in bad conditions and take your car out to a parking and practice smooth breaking. Anti lock braking system only activates when you hit the brakes hard, so 99.999% of the time you will drive you wont activate it.

Its somewhat dangerous because you will skid but on the flip-side you should have 4-wheel disc brakes that will help a lot.
