I just got my license, and I just have an unsettled feeling in my chest. It just worries me to drive sometimes. I know that if I do one thing wrong, how much of an impact that could make in everyone's lives. And it's just unsettling for me. Just those little moments where you think 'wow, what if I didn't stop at that moment...' has me freaked. I'm a 16 year old female and am just kind of worried. Is this normal? It's just weird to know that I don't have my parents there to tell me "NO! Don't pull out right now..." in the passengers seat. And you hear about things happening to teenagers all the time, and it just worries me. Is this normal?

You will make mistakes in driving. As you get older, you'll be able to recognize some of the dangerous situations a bit sooner, but it's knowledge you only get from experience. Advice? "Don't panic!"
Pay attention to the instruction you were given, because planning ahead can help you avoid getting trapped into a difficult situation. For instance, don't tailgate (unless you are in Massachusetts, where it's more or less a requirement of driving), so that when the driver in front stops, you'll have time to avoid hitting him. Watch out for puddles, where you can lose traction due to hydroplaning. If you live somewhere that you'll be driving on ice and snow, practice skidding in an icy parking lot--a huge one--so that you can learn how easily the car can swap ends on you when you skid.
You will find some people telling you that a bit of alcohol makes them a BETTER driver. What it actually does is makes them FEEL that they are better, when in actuality they are not as good. But you probably know that already. |

I'm glad to hear it!
The fact that it worries you gives me hope for the future. It seems that soooooo many people drive with total disregard for the potential harm they can do. You are driving a controlled weapon, and it needs to be given the respect that's due.
Don't let it stop you from learning, but let that fear make you a good driver! |

It actually isn't very normal but it could save your life. This will make you a more careful driver than others. This will make you focus and pay attention more. You have nothing to worry about. |
