Yours Truly,
GREAT QUESTION!!!!!
Nobody answered your question correctly so I will. I am an expert driving instructor in California with over 25 years experience, I teach this every day.
The suicide lane is also known as a "center turn lane" or a "two way left turn lane".
The answer to your question depends on where the center turn lane is located.
If it's located in a residential district, the answer is YES... you can make a U-Turn in a residential district (at intersections or in between intersections) as long as it is safe (no cars approaching).
If the center turn lane is in a "business district", the answer is NO. In a business district it is illegal to make a U-Turn between intersections.
It is legal to make a U-Turn in a business district only if you are at an intersection. The only exception is if there is a sign posted that prohibits U-Turns.
I hope this answers your question. |

First of all, there is an old saying that the only dumb question is the one not asked. There are no dumb questions, only dumb answers. Different states and towns pass different laws. Odds are that its not legal, but the best answer would come from your local law enforcement officer. Next time you see one getting gas or a cup of coffee, stop in and ask. Just don't tell him or her that you have done it! |

Suicide lanes are for turning, no U-turning. U-turns are illegal on most streets regardless of what lane you're driving in.
For those who have never heard of a suicide lane before: it is a lane in the center of the road that is used for turning only. Both directions of traffic can and do use if for turning hence the term suicide if cars from both directions decide to use the lane at the same time and find themselves suddenly facing each other. They are dangerous turning lanes, but are used when there isn't enough room for an additional lane for traffic. |

1. They have them in other states, but they are not called suicide lanes everywhere that has them.
2. I have only seen them in business areas (commercial districts). In California, it is illegal to make U-turns in business areas (commercial districts) except at intersections. Therefore, I would say no. |

I've never heard of a suicide lane before.
Is this over in America?
Where I'm from, on main roads, signs are posted as to whether certain vehicles are premitted to make u turns or not.
Sometimes it only applies to light vehicles.
It also depends on the surroundings, structure of the roads joined to it and the rate of which that particular road it is used (how often in terms of traffic flow)
It must be called a "suicide lane" for a reason if not a deterrant as the name should suggest! |

No question is a dumb question if you don't know the answer. I do not think it is illegal but I am positive if you do it and a police office sees you do it you will get stopped just because it looks bad.
Suicide lane is the center turn lane. a lot of accidents happen there thats why it is called the suicide lane |

Thye are getting rid of them where I live, but to answer your queston, that's why they are called suicide lanes. Even assuming you are going the right direction for the lane. |

In Arizona unless posted it is legal. Just realize that when you do it you assume all liability. This means that a police officer won't right you a ticket but if there is an accident you are at fault. It isn't a very wise thing to do. |

WTF is a suicide lane? Never heard that term before.
Probably not. If you don't think it is legal, it probably isn't. If there is no median between the traffic, then no, you can't make a U-turn. |
