define old
i drive a 1971 jeepster commando
no rust runs great will pass emissions for a 1981 and newer car last reading 27 ppm hc .07 co
very reliable why should i junk it
are you talking about the rust buckets out there that are falling apart if they fail safety inspection get them off the road
there are a lot of people who restore old cars that will be very insulted by your question as they consider cars before 1974 classics you wont see many late 70s to mid to late 80s out there as they build junk now
i have been rear ended several times in this car the hardest I've been hit was a 20 mph impact .....the Hyundai was destroyed
i didn't receive any damage except there paint on my bumper |

If they're in sound mechanical condition and not a hazard to the driver or the general public then there's no reason why they shouldn't. |

Hell Yes they should.
They are built out of steel, not plastic and abs rubber like cars of today.
Take a Kia Spectra and a Chevette and slam them into each other and look at the two.......
Guarantee that the kia has a lot more damage.
The cars are simpler to work on, more pleasing to the eye made by people not computers and robots.
But it is also the last of what we will ever see of Detroit autos. |

So what year shall we call a car "old"? Hmmmm? I own two Chevy ll Novas...a 1963 and a 1967...both restored by me with good brakes, excellent tires, and the lights all work. My neighbor has a 1993 Chevy Lumina with bad tires and half his lights dont't work but his brakes seem okay since he hasn't crashed through his garage door yet. So....which car should be removed from the road? My 43 year old Chevy or my neighbors 14 year old Lumina? |

I think so because they are neat and they save money on gas. I like looking at old cars and trucks. |

Yes, they should have to pass safety checks. I mean I don't want to see the day that you can't drive a '69 Camero down the street that's been rebuilt. But at the same time I don't want to get rear-ended by a drunk in a 1970 piece of junk that's not safe to drive.
I remember growing up and having highway patrol safety checks that mom or dad would have to stop at, they'd check out the car real quick and if you passed you got a sticker for your window. I don't think it cost anything but I could be wrong. What's wrong with something like that. |

Yes.
A bigger problem is all the new "safer" cars and trucks that keep falling off the road.
Safety is not the resposibility of the automobile, but the driver. |

Another thing that's not mentioned here is that folks who are low income can not afford newer vehicles. Making a law that would prohibit certain older models would be discriminating against them. As some of the others have said above as long as the vehicle is safe and legal that's all that matters. |

Why add to landfill. There is nothing wrong with older cars. Many of them are in better mechanical condition than some of the newer cars today.
Plus many get the same number of miles per gallon as current vehicles. |

Yes, if you have an old car and that people liked or want to see or have you can sell it or it may be an collectable. There isn't alaw saying that old cars can't be on the road because who knows, one day that same person might just get an old car from you. |

If you mean oldtimers (built before 1950) and they are okay, yes, from time to time, but not for everyday use. They need not stand in museums all the time.
Older cars need more gas, so they are bad for the environnement and also for the owner's purse! So if you are talking of a rusty car from the 1980s, then I say no. It is in the end cheaper to buy a new one, not only because of the gas, but also because of the maintenance costs. And some countries give tax reduction to those who buy an environmental friendly car. |

i think all cars built before 1990 should be taken off unless they are show type cars or sunday driver type cars. i love old cars and dont want to see then gone but most dont have good gas mileage and spew high levels of emmissions out. they need to start cracking down on these peel and stick inpection places! |
