I see so many drivers stop at roundabouts not knowing who has the right of way,Do you ?

Personally I have just read the reason why I was not taught this when taking driving lessons before I passed my test at the first attempt, do you know the reason ?

It's in the Highway Code! Page 64, para. 185, new issue. Give way to traffic from the right. (unless instructed otherwise). This has been the rule for as long as I can remember, where's the problem?

Old Man of Coniston!.
Give way to the right, unless you can judge the gaps better than the others!.

You should give way to the vehicle from the right. Fine if there are just two vehicles but if there are three or more vehicles, one on each road, there can be confusion. The next level rule is that the first one there goes first and then it follows sequentially. A problem arising from this is if you're not sure who got there first. You then get the absurd situation of everyone giving way to everyone else, so no one moves. Americans have the same problem with 4-way stop signs.

I don't know the reason why you weren't taught this when you learnt to drive.

You always give way to the right
There are not many drivers that know how to drive on roundabouts. IE they drive all the way round on the nearside lane when they should use the offside lane and pass to the nearside at the exit precceeding the one that you want to leave at. If you see an arial model of this you would see how easy it works

The Cat's Whiskers
You give way to the right. But I don't know why you weren't taught this.

even worse when people stop on the roundabout to let someone out

You are supposed to give way to vehicles coming from the
right but i usually find that at a 3 lane roundabout everyone
comes to a grinding halt and looks at each other to see who
is going to go first .It`s the little roundabouts that cause the
problems. If you like roundabouts you can visit one at
hemel hempstead it`s a cracker and is/was called the magic
roundabout. It has one big roundabout circled with lots of
smaller ones around its circumference.

scuppo
yes you give way to the right

tazzydevil
simple, you give way at a roundabout, left and right, but vehicles approaching from the right have priority, you should give way to your left, most people approach a r/b looking to their right, its then they pull out and run straight into the side of a large truck which is pulling out from the entrance in front of them, vehicle already on the r/b have right of way, as you approach the r/b, after checking both ways you see its clear you can pull straight out, but you should have also checked the entrance to your right, and if there is a vehicle approaching the junction you are advised to ascertain wether you would be safe to continue, remember you might do everything correctly only to find yourself in a tricky position because the fool approaching the r/b from your right is only checking his right and continues straight onto the r/b

Britbloke
As others have adequately answered, when approaching a roundabout give way to the right. Some people above have pointed to the confusion when everyone arrives at a mini roundabout at the same time - who has right of way? Is it 'first to come, first to go'?

The problem then is - who decides who was first to arrive - maybe there should be a referee on the corner! The answer is 'eye contact' - make eye contact with the other drivers and, between you, decide who's going to move away first.
