I slid on blackice on the highway and flew off the road. What would have happened if I hit the trees?

I keep going through this in my mind. I skidded off the road after hitting black ice---flew through the air and wound up in a ditch about 1/8th of an inch from trees. I only hurt my arm. What would have happened if I hit these trees going 45mph?
Is it unusual to keep seeing this over and over again in my head?

I did reduce my speed from 65 to 45. IF this ever happens again, how do I gain control of the car? Release the wheel? It didn't matter that I tried to go towards the spin. Should you brake?

If you were wearing you seats belt you may have been shaken up a bit unless you hit the trees with your driver's door. Then you would have a heck of a bump somewhere on your left side. Odds are that the door would not allow anything to penetrate the interior at that speed but you would certainly feel it. You were lucky. Chalk it up as a 'life lesson' and move on. It's only sheet metal anyway.

And it looks like a few responders did not register the speed that you were travelling at.

When you hit black ice--your tires no longer have traction. Therefore, steering towards the skid will not work. Your tires have nothing to grab onto. The usual rule is turn the wheel towards the direction you are heading.

It really depends what part of the car smashed into the trees. If it was the driver's side--you could have been seriously injured with head injuries along with internal injuries. It is not unheard of to hear of people dying of this very thing. Hitting headon, your airbags would deploy to absorb some of the impact.

Consider yourself lucky. It's actually quite common to see keep seeing the event over and over in your mind(sometimes in slow motion).

If the road conditions are bad (heavy snow), avoid going out.

You suffer anything from minor bumps and bruises to DEATH.

Learn from your experience - slow down when weather conditions are capable of producing icing conditions.

When Snow Falls - Your Speed Should Fall Also.

This is especially true when the temperature is very close to the freezing point - above or below - because at those temperatures Snow and Ice are at their slipperiest and most dangerous.

Pay attention to changing conditions - adjust your speed accordingly.
If you find yourself on a slippery road surface unexpectedly slow down gradually to a safe speed - avoid any sudden changes of direction or speed.

There's a good chance you would have been killed if you hit the trees. Of course it depends on if your car has an airbag and if you're wearing your seat belt.

It's not unusual to see this accident over and over in your head. This was a big event and you're lucky to be alive. As time goes by, you'll move forward and pasted this experience.

if you ever go into a skid again, you should turn your wheels in the direction of the skid while applying steady pressure to your breaks at the same time. don't let go of the wheel because that leaves your wheels to go in any direction.

if you had hit the trees when you skidded, your car would have most likely been totally destroyed, based on your speed the tree would have started to bend a little (depends on the size of the tree), and you probably would have either been critically injured or dead. you better be glad you reduced your speed from 65 because if you didn't, you would most likely be in the hospital right now or GOD forbid, dead.

You most likely would have: totalled your car
had serious injuries

It depends if they were a line of thin trees or large ones. Large trees generally win out when it vs. a car.

The problem with black ice is you can't see it. If the road conditions were bad you should slow down to 25 mph. Even though 45 sounds slow, when the road is slick anything could happen.

Someone is watching over you.

You would knock some bark off and shake a few leaves loose. Hopefully they would have seen you lose control and uprooted themselves and drag their saplings out of harms way.
