I started practicing driving yesterday...?
|
I got my permit about a week ago, and yesterday my dad took me to a mall parking lot (completely empty) and I practiced in his car. Turning/stopping/parking etc basic stuff. My question is: When do I know I'm ready to start practicing in traffic? And on the streets? Because I picked up turning and all that pretty quickly, but I'm still nervous so how do I know when I'm ok to start it? Additional Details Also, is it easier to drive on the highway? because in a few weeks I'm going on vacation and my parents want me to get highway experience on the ohio turnpike.

Congrats on your permit! . Now comes the hard part - transferring all that rules and road sign stuff to behind the wheel . You can do this . Dad is getting you off to a good start in a no-traffic situation . On surface streets, you just ease into it and drive the speed limit or whatever conditions allow . Get in the habit of using the turn signals every time you change lanes or direction with 3-5 seconds of notice . If you can't change lanes or make a turn - don't panic . Go to the next street or offramp and work your way back . Always allow enough time to get where you're going and perhaps a few extra minutes to get 'unlost.' . Know where you're going and what roads you want to take to get there before you start . Know how to find an alternate route . Driving is so boring that it is exhausting (you'll see what I mean on your trip) . When you start to feel tired, find a gas station or restaurant where you can pull over and stop . Turn off the cell phone or let a passenger do the talking for you . Focus on the driving and navigation and you'll be just fine.
All the best. |

The parking lot is a good place to get used to the car, but once you have the basics down you're ready for the streets. There is not too much to pointing a car where you want it to go and getting it there. But 'Driving' is more than that.
After the parking lot go for a drive around the neighborhood, streets you're familiar with in residential neighborhoods where there is minimal traffic, then soon you'll feel confident enough for busier streets.
Dont' worry about the turnpike. It's easier to drive up there. No worry about cross traffic and there are no lights and other distractions you'll have on the streets.
Good luck. |

You should try it your first day. My dad took me to an empty parking lot my first day of driving, and i was on the streets after an hour of practicing in the parking lot. I think you should practice on a lesser conjested road first, and work your way up. |

You are ready now! Just remain calm and confident...hit up some side streets with some 4 way stops.
Confidence is important while driving. I was a very nervous driver when I first started, I'd white knuckle the steering wheel. Once I started to relax driving became easy as pie.
Good Luck! |

I haven't even got my permit yet, but i have driven on the highway many times. but i wouldn't say that it is EASIER-obviously its going to be easy with no one around. It's just important to know how to be a defensive driver, and to keep a watch on anyone around you. and just try it and do your best. I'm sure you'll do fine! =]

Practicing in an empty parking lot is the perfect way to start. It sounds like it went well. I don't see any reason why you shouldn't drive a short distance on a regular road as part of your next lesson. Of course, it should be a road that doesn't have a lot of traffic, and preferably a road where you can safely pull over to the side if things start getting too exciting. But if you handled the parking lot OK, a little time on the street, with an experienced driver in the car, should be fine. |

Since you are still nervous I would recommend that you take more time and practice on the streets because the highway is no place to make a mistake...... |

You can do it now. I'd start with country roads or roads with less traffic. Also aim for streets that don't have a lot of cars parked on both sides of the street (unless they're wide streets). As you get comfortable with driving on those, then move on to busier streets. Highways really aren't bad. I'd try to get some highway time in before vacation, and get a little of that time during rush hour to get a little experience. You never know when you're going to hit heavy traffic when traveling. That said, just stay calm and relax. On the highway stay in a middle lane unless you'll need to take an exit. That way you don't have to be as concerned about merging traffic. Good luck!! |
