I'd love to have a job putting up road signs for the city/county/state. Can anybody with experience tell me about this? Like, when I apply, what job title do I put? I put "maintenance of traffic control devices" and the HR woman had no idea what I was talking about.
Additional Details
I know that there are many different aspects to the roads and bridges department, but is there not a position for just sign / light maintenance? I've seen trucks driving around with nothing on the back but signs and poles - and there is definately no room for any other tools / equipment

Dude, that is just a small part of the job--you would also be doing a lot of traffic flagging, working in hot asphalt repairing pot holes, and digging ditches, etc...you would hate it...it is hard, dirty physical labor...
The H-R lady must have thought you were nuts (no offense) but the signs are just a small part of what municipal workers do...depending upon the location (city or town or county) where they work, and how the labor is divided, they might also be responsible for reading water meters, mowing grass, plowing snow, etc. You need to talk to someone who works there, other than the H-R lady, to get a feel for what the duties are.

You should try something like the Ministry of Highways, or something like that. You could also try the engineering department with your local city and they might be able to help you with jobs as well. |

one of my family members told me he could get me a job but putting up highway signs and it pays $20.00hr. im a bit nervous though. i don't know if i can handle it but i know God will give me the strength and the knowledge. anyone with advice pls email. God bless you all. |

No, your right, there is such thing as a job '' putting up signs '', and does not include any other duties such as flagging etc..
My friend done this job for 3 months in Cambridge, and got £300 a week for it too. Its not only road signs, but signs for shops, resturants, bill boards etc.
