I work the same and get a 3/4 hr lunch break and then a 15 min tea break.
I get paid for my breaks so not sure on yours, ring the citizens advice they should know about wot u r allowed and about the phone. As far as I'm concerned its not really a break if you are at your station or answering your phone. |

I work the same shift pattern as you, but the place I work is so laid back.
I work when the work is there to do.
My breaks last from anything like 45 minutes to 10 hours.
Seriously though.
I think you should have a 20 minute break in the morning, 30 minutes dinner and 10 minutes in the afternoon, away from your work station.
You should have a designated break room with cooking facilities as required and an ample supply of fresh water.
Your contract of employment should have your break and meal times included.

when i used to work 9 hour shifts i got an hours lunch and two fifteen minute breaks (one in the morning and one in the afternoon) . I was allowed to leave the building and certainly not have to sit at my desk or carry the phone. Surely that is not right |

Depends on your labor laws and what the company has in place. If you’re like a friend of mine who works at a data center, you may have to be there the full 12 hours, with only 5 10 minute breaks and one 30 minute lunch. Also he is not allowed to leave his work station for his breaks, he needs to have the station manned at all times. So when he is on break, he is still technically working. That’s just the nature of his business. Now here at my shop, I have techs here 24 hours a day many times. we are not technically a 24 hour shop, but many of the towing companies in my area know me and know that if someone needs work done to bring it to me and either my self (that’s why I’m no line right now) or one of my other techs who may be working will attempt to get them back on the road in the middle of the night. Anyway the point I was making is my techs who are here at night work a 12 hour shift. they can take a break when they need to for as long as the need too just as long as the work get completed we always have cars that need work, so they are always busy, but I allow some wiggle room as I know it's difficult and not safe for them to work when they are tired. So if they need a nap they can take 1 or 2 hours to get some sleep. Again it all comes down to the type of business and the labor laws. |
