totally agree my son and his best freind who was driving were in a serious accident on xmas eve when they collided with a single decker bus , the freind was killed outright and my son was left fighting for his life with head and chest injuries he has now fully recovered but this was caused through SPEEDING |

Sorry to hear about those 2 guys. That is very sad. You are right some new drivers do speed and although speeding is wrong for anyone, as new drivers they are not experienced enough to be driving over the speed limits. Really no one should speed so much even if they are experienced, think they can speed and drive ok. |

Sorry about your loss But the fact of the matter is that speed doesn't kill people ; Incompetence kills people . Speed is simply a number
Maybe it's time we got away from the idiocy of " The only safe way to do something really dangerous is not to do it at all " philosophy and actually teach kids how to do dangerous things safely.
Maybe it's time the State stopped giving out drivers licenses so easily and cheaply.
Personally I wouldn't give a kid a DL until he showed me that he could competently handle a vehicle during a 75 mph L front tire blow -out in the rain.
How ?
Use a high-tech simulator such as commercial pilots use to be certified on.
The technology is there, it simply requires the political will to make it happen. |

Totally agree with you, often the occupants of the speeding car get away from the scene of crashes with minor injuries leaving another innocent party dead or critical.
It's not just new drivers but everyone, especially those that drink drive. Dont do it..... |

A very important reminder. glad you put it out there. I too live in a small community. a couple of months ago one kid was killed rolling a car. two others were ejected and the car burst into flames. Now the driver faces manslaughter charges.
I was with the First responders unit in the Fire Department for years and I got really depressed over seeing people I knew die. There is something very sobering about unzipping a body bag and helping to set the broken body of a man i knew in the community (different accident)
There have been several accidents that were fatalities here and most if not all were caused by driving excessively or drinking OR both.
A last little bit of irony to add to this. I am now 39, but at 18 I drove my car down the free way and blacked out behind the wheel. When the volkswagen I was driving finally came to rest, I had most of my scalp torn back below my ear, my knee was damaged and I had fractured 6 vertabrea. One was partially crushed by the impact of coming out of the car during the 50 mph rollover. I lived, I healed, though the pain to my back and neck over the years never lets me forget that day half a life ago. Several surgeries too. Ya know, I have tears rolling down my cheeks right now thinking about it all.
Everyone seems to feel invincible when they are so young. It's normal, part of the growing up process, especially with boys and young men. Just remember your friends who died always and that is probably the best thing you can do to honor their death.
yep, pass it all on. |

There was one like that in California recently. Stop and think before you drive is the lesson. |

There are certain territories that belong to illegal racers with license. No matter what the police do; give them a chase, arrest them; somehow they gather again at the same places and they race again. They race in public roads with all the cars moving. The illegal racing is a form of gambling. Some are gangsters. Some are school goers who think Saturday night is just too bored at home. Some of them schedule the race on every Friday night without fail. You hear the noise from where you are. It is a gang thing. It is a peer thing too. If you pass by that territory, you see them with their bikes and cars sitting together watching, observing until somebody gives a signal and then off they race. |

I feel more sorry for the passenger as he was the innocent one. |

I'm tired of these Fed-Ex people getting to work, doing 60 on my neighborhood street where the speed limit is 30. They, and these dump trucks; not slowing down any time soon! |

We learn from others, more when they're brothers.
This time you shared what others have dared.
Thank you for warning us today
A true lesson from a strangers grave. |

A lesson for us all - never think you arent a learner any more. My mum has driven for 35 years and she has never had an accident because she has the attitude that she is still a learner and doesnt try to impress anyone.
People who want to be safer should first do pass plus and then do a course with IAM (institute of advanced motorists).
Its not necessarily speeding that kills though, its losing control. On country roads, there is more likely to be standing water, ice, mud, sharp blind bends, narrow roads with high edges etc.
You have to drive to the conditions, so 80mph on a clear dry day on a motorway is not going to hurt anyone, however if there is snow or rain falling you wouldnt want to be going more then 40/50 on that same motorway.
Dont be remembered as a statistic.
Hope the kid driver's ok. |

Happens all the time, in every First World country i suppose. More often among the youths aged 18-25, either under the influence of liquor, drug or just plain showing off! Just remember not to praise any hot-blooded guy at the wheel that he's real cool driving the car that fast.
Speeds beyond 90kph esp on 2 or 3-lane highways cannot ensure safety. Why don't societies and govts raise the minimum legal age for driving a car or riding a motor-cycle to 21, that magical age when you become very independant, more sensible?
Then we would have less fatal road accidents and heart-wrenching pains! |

Was a nurse for 11 years and worked in accident and emergency. Most of the problems I dealt with were teenagers in cars driving too fast or were drunk or were trying to show off to their mates. I have seen too many youngsters lose their lives trying to be clever. I think that what you're saying is right. These people not only risk their own lives, but other peoples lives as well. Maybe we need to raise the age limit from 18 to 21. But would that make any difference??
I lost my friend in a car accident 4 years ago, he was only 21. |

It wasn't the speed that killed them - it was their poor driving. Speed is a symptom, not a cause, of the problem.
RIP to those two youngsters. |

What you have said has been said a MILLION times before. Drivers STILL ignore requests from the public AND police to SLOW DOWN.
The only way to stop drivers from speeding is to limit the top speed a vehicle can do - how about limiting ALL vehicles to 50 mph? |
