right onto the same two lane road - can they turn at the same time each into their own lane? or would the driver turning right turn first and then the driver turning left?

The left-turning driver should yield. But be on your toes -- he might not.
Remember -- Right of Way doesn't exist until yielded -- it can't be taken by force. |

No, the driver turning right has the right of way and they should turn first. If you happened to crash in this scenario, it would be your fault. |

Turning right pretty much always has right of way. Imagine drawing a straight line in the direction of both cars, He wouldn't have to cross into your line for his turn, but you would have to cross into his line.
If you understand that concept, your good to go! |

Nope..........the driver turning right has the right of way... |

the driver turning right should go first. You can not assume they will turn in to their own lane. Only take responsibility for your driving. When you expect people to do something a certain way accidents happen. People always turn wide and go into the other lane. |

The person turning right has the RIGHT of way.. always. |

whom ever gets to the intersection first with the proper turn signal on has right of way. If it is a tie, then we are going to have to pray for someone to be big about it and wave the other person through.
Unless you are a stunt driver, I would not attempt both cars making the turn at the same time. |

In California, the driver turning left is not required to finish his turn in the left lane, so the car turning right should yeild because the left turn driver could end up in the same lane. |

I believe legally you can both turn at the same time (dont quote me on that one), but dont do it. Wait for the person to turn right before you make your left turn. You dont want the person making an illegal lane change and running right into you. When on a right turn the driver turns into the left lane instead of the right lane, they are guilty of an illegal lane change. If they hit you while they are doing it, they are at fault.
Just wait the 3 seconds until you know some dumbass isnt going to run into you. |

You would have precedence. Of course if they they moved into their own lanes - you into the nearside lane of the left turn - the other driver into the second lane of their right turn, what is lost? The problem arrives when they hit one another. A court would incline towards the vehicle making the left turn. After all you are in the nearside lane and the other vehicle is in the off-side lane. The situation changes when one of you moves into another lanes without signalling.
Insurance companies would would not want to know. |

They will have the right of way making the right hand turn. You can turn at the same time but risk being hit. When turning right they are supposed to stay in the right most lane , but I do not see it very often. Most people want to the fast lane as quickly as possible so they can ride it at their liesure till they need to cut back to the right to get where they are going. |

Both are legally allowed to turn simultaneously. It's not safe to do so, as you can't count on the person turning left to not make an illegal lane change and merge into the right lane. I turned right once when someone was turning left onto a THREE-lane road and got honked at. They got the finger! |

You should always turn into your immediate lane. So in your case, turning left would put you in the outside lane and person turning right from opposite direction would turn into curb side lane.
Theoretically, you should both be able to turn @ same time - if you both turn properly! Go ahead and turn but watch the other person always and be prepared to stop if they turn "wide" which many people do! Not everyone follows the rules of the road.
If they turn curbside and you did get in accident, they would be at fault if they did not check to see if lane change was safe to do. Despite being "right side right of way" this does not give them license to scoot across lanes with no regard for others! They turn curbside, check if coast is clear, signal out and turn into outside lane. If you are turning, they must wait in that lane until it is safe to enter it. They can not "side-swipe" you and then say -"Well I was turning right" as a defense!
Just be cautious - even if they are wrong it's not worth it to deal w/the hassle and pay deductibles! When big trucks are involved, let them turn first as they usually need both lanes! |
