If a bus crashed with a full load of passengers would the law introduce seat belts as compulsary?

i travel on public buses all the time and i have often wondered how many passengers would be killed instantly as there are no saftey measures aboard.

I feel that the absence of seat belts on buses, especially SCHOOL buses, is the most ridiculous case of negligence I've ever seen.

The cops will pull over an adult not wearing a seat belt and give him a ticket... yet that cop's own children are probably at that very moment riding on a school bus without any seat belts.

Those seats are so big and slick, the little kids slide all over the place, and would all go flying about like lottery balls if the bus crashed.

Doubt it they rarely get over 10mph.

it would have to be a pretty big crash to do much damage! a bus hitting a car.. u cant hardly feel it on the bus.. and drivers are taught offensive driving.. i know it dont always seem like it, but we are taught to expect the worst at all times..
when i first learnt to drive the first thing was my instructor sat me on the seat said he was gonna hit 20mph then do an emergency stop.. i was holding on but swung round the pole! then he pointed out imagine if i hadnt been expecting that and i was like 80 yrs old! so trust me i do anything to avoid braking hard/accident!

all new buses have seat belts but cannot make you wear them , you travel at your own risk , this was bought out in 2002 so ask your transport officer of your local county why there are no safety measures yet , look it up on the net to be sure of these facts .

they have crashed, as have trains and no seat belts have been introduced as yet.

Well there have been countless crashes around the world like that, and we still don't have a law. So to answer your question ..... NO

No is the answer

In the UK most coaches use seat belts as it is a legal requirement for new coaches but as far as I know no bus uses them. In the UK buses are used mainly for short journeys.

Bout year and a half ago in ireland 5girls were killed in a school bus crash and now children have to wear seatbelts going to school.
It didnt change anything about public buses though

It depends how many buses crash.Sometimes its not the bus driver's fault but I think they should put seatbelts just in case.Bus crashes don't happen that often so you probably don't have anything to worry about.

because school buses are designed with crush zones. Meaning that if there were an accident (god forbid) parts of the bus are made to take the impact of the crash,i.e. the engine compartment, the cargo bays, and the seats. just like cars have crumple zones. if there was an accident and it entered the passenger compartment would you want to be stapped in the seat that took the impact (die)or thrown forward(injured for sure)but alive. And now a days the kids could use the seat belts as weapons. Also, it's about the safest means of travel.

Pit Bull
It's not the fitting of seatbelts that's the problem, it's enforcing the wearing of them.
There are far too many laws that just can't be enforced as it is and who would miss the odd busload of old age pensioners anyway?

Bandit600
A bus rarely does more than 40mph on it's route and the front of it is surprisingly collapsible, so any impact would be minor for the passengers. If it was that big a concern people wouldn't be allowed to travel as a standing passenger.

It takes time and lots of deliberation in the Parliament to pass
laws that require passengers as well as the bus driver to wear
seat belts when the bus is moving.
There has been numerous occasions that buses have crashed
with full loads of passengers in it and many have died instantly
due to the terrible accident on the highway.
However, no one has commented on the introduction of seat
belts for the bus driver and its passengers.
It's time that they introduce it through Parliament and I'm one
of those who are in favour of it.

nommie
i think they should.. *just my luck btw* i was on a bus i had to use a wheelchair for a short space of time due to an operation on my legs from illness. and it had no adeqaute wheelchair zone instead it was full with peoples shopping people refused to move it... pfft>>> and we got hit from the side and i nearly fell out i know it sounds funny i laugh aboiut it now but still its dangerous anything could of happened. and now im better i still see parents letting their kids jump all around the seats and stuff. this is so damn risky!

There have been bus crashes with many deaths, but people won't hold still for restraints.
A bus is safer anyway, but the law won't even make seats on planes, trains and buses face backwards, which is a proven safety step, especially on planes. Go figure. Write your congresspeople?

fiona
Just because you cannot "see" no safety measures, do not make the mistake of thinking there are none.

How many accidents do you hear about each day when there are multiple deaths in a car?

When did you EVER hear of a bus load of passengers being killed instantly?

Since you clearly have no concept of the extensive safety devices fitted to buses, do not scaremonger

Candy
No it would take several serious accidents for that to happen

Many people, particulary 4by4 types don't even wear them in their own vehicles even when on their mobile phones and drinking tins of red bull, so wearing belts on buses, no chance. It would not suit their macho cowboy/girl image.
