I have a PT Cruiser with good tires and it fishtails very easily on snow packed roads, should I add or subtract (remove back seat) weight?

More suitable tires will help, but nothing will reduce fishtailing and damage better than slowing down. |

get some snowtires or studded tires if allowed and don't put any extra weight in the back |

neither, you should put snow tires on all 4 wheels. The car has no traction on the rear. you do anything with weight and it will magnify the problem |

I don't think you should add weight to the rear of your vehicle if you have FWD. Have you had your brakes checked out lately? My husband had a problem like yours with a FWD car, and it turned out that his brakes were sticking. |

yeah i agree with everyone else, however tires are expensive, so get a large bag like the really really big zip lock bags or a couple feed bags from tractor supply and go somewhere there is a lot of shale (the small rocks they put on the roads) fill them up and put them in the trunk, probably use two or three kinda full bags. just light enough that you can get them in the car. its what i do with my truck, it gets you by for cheap but you really need snow tires. remember, slow down, save a life. good luck |

Put traction tires (with studs) on all four corners.
One can always get a car moving...can you stop it and turn it in slick conditions is the question.
Some years ago GM advised that if you use chains on a front wheel drive car you should put them on the rear wheels. I'm guessing that they believed that the engine weight over the drive wheels would get you moving and the chains on the rear would keep you going in a straight line.
I'm not a GM engineer, but this seems improper to me.
Good luck. |

Weight will help but instead of snow tires you will need to get a set of winter titers.
The superior traction that winter tires deliver, as much as a 25 to 50 percent increase over all-season tires, can very well be the margin you need to stop in time or turn to avoid trouble. |
