Actually, the law (UK) states that a pedestrian has the right of way when crossing a road "into which you are turning". That is somewhat different to some of the answers above.

A lot depends on how tightly law enforcement is watching, but you SHOULD wait and let the pedestrian go by because you CAN get a citation if you don't.

In my town, the way it TYPICALLY works is that if a pedestrian has almost finished crossing, and is approaching the FAR corner, a driver who finishes his turn would PROBABLY not get a ticket. But if a pedestrian is approaching the near corner, even if there is plenty of room for the car to safely complete the turn, a drive will very likely get a ticket if he is observed.

Understand, that the law states that the pedestrian has the right of way while he is in the entire intersection. This assumes that the pedestrian may change his mind, half way across.

I have never been comfortable driving across any part of the crosswalk while a pedestrian is still in it. In my mind, he had better be on that LAST step before reaching the far sidewalk before I make that left turn, and NEVER as long as the pedestrian is approaching me.

Pedestrians always have the right of way. That means you must stop for them even if they are already in the street. That is just being courteous. It is the law to let them cross if they are already in the street. It is a different story if you the driver is already in motion. I have seen incidents where a pedestrian was halfway in the road and cars were driving by. If you are turning and the pedestrian is in the street you must stop. If you are moving and the pedestrian is in the street, then you can still go. But they always have the right of way.

Traffic law --

If you are at an intersection and a pedestrian enters said intersection; you MUST wait until said pedestrian has completely vacated the crosswalk.

If you do anything else, said pedestrian has every moral right to reach in to your vehicle and beat you soundly about the head and shoulders.

No, if the pedestrian has already started to cross you have to wait for them. If it's a really long crosswalk then you can go, and you don't have to wait, but only if they're really far away from you. If you're unsure if you'll be able to pass before them don't take the chance!

WOW lot of bad information for you on this one. The law says a pedestrian has the right of way in any marked crossing. It also states that you my not interrupt or impede the pedestrian traffic when they are crossing. It says NOTHING about having to wait until they have completely cleared the intersection for you to drive through the intersection. This is a common miss conception and as you can see from the other answers most people think it is fact when it is not. So by all means if you will not impede them in any way you may proceed through the intersection legally right or left turn. Hope this clears it up for you. Good luck

I turn if there are at least two lanes of space between the people and my vehicle. Any closer than that, I wait for them to cross.
