If i only stopped to see if they were okay and then left before the cops arrived can I be in trouble?

no its not your fault, the person in back of you apparently didn't have their car under control either, happened to me once, the guy slid, i lost control, following too close trying not to hit another car, and headed right into a telephone pole. The guy apologized but he did nothing wrong, it was nature, and we can't control the snow.

I was always told that if your car wasn't hit you weren't at fault. Especially if they were behind you. They were following too close.

if you caused them to lose control they were following too close for conditions and you would not be liable. i do believe you would have to remain on the scene, some state laws may vary though

First of all if you witnessed an accident it is illegal to leave the scene without telling the police what happened. I need more information on what happened to tell you if your at fault.

You say you lost control in snowy weather... what made you lose control? Were you driving too fast for the conditions? Not paying attention to the road? Abruptly slam on the brakes?
I don't know enough about the details of your accident, but I think you are partly at fault. Sorry, but I think if you caused a chain reaction, then you are at least partly to blame. I disagree with the general assumption that if you didn't hit someone, then you aren't to blame for the result of your actions.

You were not at fault for this collision. It was the snowy conditions that caused this accident. Also know that the person behind you probably did not have the proper distance. You also did the right thing by stopping. The thing is that you were the witness to an accident. You were almost directly involved. You did not make contact with anyone but at the same time you caused the chain reaction in the accident. So since you were the cause and you saw what happened, you are legally bound to stop in this situation. If you leave the scene of the accident where you were the one who started it, then you are in essence breaking the law and can be charged with a felony. So no, you are not at fault and you did the right thing by stopping. You cleared yourself of any charges in this situation.

Edit: If you leave before the cops get to the scene, then I would be concerned. The thing to understand is if you are the scene of the accident whether hurt or not, you should stay to file the police report. As I said you caused the chain reaction which led to the other driving being in a collision. So since you spun out, you are the one the police needed to talk to in order to get more information. So with that being said I'd be concerned about that, but again you are not at fault for the accident.
