If my wing mirror is mashed, is it illegal?
Find answers to your legal question.

If my wing mirror is mashed, is it illegal?

I know it is a requirment for ther MOT, but if a policeman saw it cracked would it be a violation?
Additional Details
it is the passenger side.

It depends on how badly it is broken. If it is completely smashed, then it is illegal, but if it is just cracked and you can see clearly despite the crack, it will not fail its MOT, and the police will not bother you. I drove for two years with a cracked side mirror without any problems. The MOT garage just advised to replace it and rather than charging me an arm and a leg for doing it told me to get a replacement from an auto centre. It was not very expensive.
If the whole fitting has been torn off, then you do have to replace it a.s.a.p. and that will cost you, but I have a friend to whom this happened ( the car was vandalised overnight in the street) and the policeman who noticed it simply gave her a warning.
I am talking about UK here, not USA.

no it's not against the law at all

It depends what mirror. The drivers side wing mirror is a requirement of law so if that one is smashed it is illegal to drive. If its the passenger side its okay to drive with.

Hope this helps!

As long as you have 2 mirrors (either drivers or passenger side and the rear view) you are legal.

no but better have the glass replaced

dadseimaj
The law says that you must have at least two rear view mirrors. You could have one wing mirror and one interior mirror, or two wing mirrors.

So you aren't really breaking the law

If your broken mirror has sharp projections then that, in itself, is an offence.

In the interests of safety and common sense I'd advise getting it replaced asp. You are blind down that side of the car.

If your car has a rear view mirror and 2 wing mirrors, it will pass an MOT test if 1 of the 3 is knackered.

The police will only stop and fine you if it's on the Drivers Side. You will only get a warning for the Passengers Side.

regardless of what other people have said it is not illegal to drive without a wing mirror, but for your own peace of mind it is,I for one could not drive without my mirrors but if I did it would not be unlawful.
if on the other hand you were involved in a accident then the police could take a different view if they believed having no mirror was a factor in the accident.

Depend on how bad the crack was, if it were totally smashed then it would be illegal.

HI, if the glass is only cracked you can just buy a replacement glass for it or alternatively you could get one from a motor scrapyard. If the whole unit is broken you may get a "FIX IT" notice from the "dibble" where upon you will have a certain time to fix it. The glass if just cracked is not a violation but if came across a "dibble"who was being arsey he could give you a fix it notice too. hope that helped.
