If speed cameras work why do generate so much revenue ?

In my opinion the best way to stop speeding is to have senors on the roadside at black spots and schools etc., they evaluate the m.p.h. of the on coming traffic and flash a warning to slow down.
Speeding in the main is a momentary lapse in consentration and 99.9% of drivers would obey the warning.
There are several of these sensors in the area where I live and they WORK.
The thought of causing an accident and killing someone let alone a child is abhorant to us all.
Fining someone £60 ( twelve hours pay to someone one minimum wage is not the answer) these are the people who can ill afford to pay and appeals are automatically rejected
The practise of raising revenue in this way is driving a wedge between the police and Joe Public and no amount of reassurances will not convince us they are fair.
Yes, Ive just been issued a ticket 41 years of of driving!

I agree with you, the reason for speed cameras I beleive is to make money. BUT if drivers actually stuck to the limit in the first place then wouldn't moan so much, it's not hard to stick to the limit, I had to do it while learning and on my test 6 and half years ago and still manage now.

I drive professionally about 100,000 miles per anum; mostly at night.

I don't know how many speed-cameras I pass; all armed and ready to get me.

Stastically, I am ten times more likely to get penalty points on my licence than the average driver, even though I drive on largely deserted roads; save for a few rabbits and foxes who like to play dare with the trucks at night.

After 1,000,000 miles of accident-free driving, I now have two speeding offences on my licence.

It's a classic example of the move towards the absolutist's dream of a police-state, where our every move is recorded by some jobsworth or other. The sad thing is, the "speed-camera partnerships" are another example of a government sponsored gravy-train, which governments erroneously think of as "self financing".

In fact, how long will it be before speed-cameras cripple the economy?

As for safety, they haven't yet installed cameras in North Yorkshire, because they do not regard them as beneficial.

Personally, from what I have seen, they make not the slightest contribution to road-safety, but whenever "they" are interviewed, they suggest that "speed is the biggest cause of accidents."

On that basis, everyone who flies in a plane should be dead. In point of fact, accidents are the result of bad-driving or lack of observation (which amounts to the same thing). Speed is merely a contributory factor in the severity of injury, but certainly not the cause.

People should realise, that the UK, on a per mile basis, is one of the safest countries in the world in which to drive.

I think they cause accidents due to the concertina effect. I drive a slow car but the emergency style braking done by most drivers near cameras even affects me badly when i'm travelling quite far behind in a queue of traffic. I guess this is actually to do with drivers not being sure of the speed limit as much as anything else. I'm all in favour of the signs which tell you how fast you are going. This seems to really work, and also gives you a chance to check how accurate your speedo is. Apparently i hear the police have decided not to plough back UK proceeds into more cameras but invest it in other road safety measures instead, which i'm glad to hear!

Well, I can see your point. I'm a fan of the non-punitive sensors and smiley/sad face warnings too. On the other hand, there are enough self-centred b*******ds out there who don't care about anyone else but themselves and, sadly, hitting them where it hurts is probably the only deterrant that works.

I got caught by a camera earlier this year. I was devastated to have points on my licence, as I like to think of myself as a good citizen, but it was a fair cop.

the original purpose of speed camers was to catch offenders at so-called accident balck spots, that means areas and places were there was a higher propability of an accident due to high speed .
now than, as with everything in this world , there is not a police man in charge of speed cameras who is tasked to place the cameras at such places were they do the most good,
but
that is run by a comitee formed by administrators in charge of a desk only who would not recognize a day's duty as a policeman if it came up and took a bite out of their ar** , but they all know everything about policies and "maximising the revenue for?? their high renumeration themselves and to pay for all the other administrators.
case in point : in ireland a national road, the a4, there has never been an accident at that spot, ever, but there is a speed camera, producing the highest revenue in the state.

kunt
get a car with cruise control or a function where you can set the max speed. you wont go over it then. as for the sensors your on about i live in a city and people race to see who gets the highest speed. i agree that £60 is alot but surely drivers who are caught the majority dont reoffend.

It is manifestly clear that UK speed cameras are there solely to earn money - much of which pays for the costs of running the so-called 'Speed Camera Partnerships'

The Spanish (and others) use the proven most effective form of speed control - devices which flash up to the driver his actual speed in relation to the posted limit.

The reason we do not have them here is that they earn no cash.
